Anarchy and Austerity: Why London Won't Be the Last City to Burn (Spending Cuts Lead to Riots?)
The Atlantic ^ | 08/11/2011

The Great Recession gave birth to a lost generation across the world, where youth unemployment rates stretch into the 20s, 30s and even 40s. Those millions have responded with violence.

The riots and fires consuming London are a story about senseless violence and crime. They are also a story about urban politics, race relations, education inequality, and British culture and society. But underneath all of that, they are part of an economic story that is universal.

For the last year, Great Britain has embraced austerity to a degree that would make some American conservatives blush. The purpose of shrinking government was to reduce debt. But the effect has been to kill the economy. With the UK tottering on the razor's edge of recession, consumer confidence is at a record low, unemployment is rising,

SNIP SNIP

The theft and violence and street crime and lawlessness in London is shocking. But it's not unique. Around the world, the burden of unemployment falls hardest on the young, who often respond with violence. The average jobless rate between 18-29 years was nearly 20% last year in OECD countries, the Wall Street Journal has reported. High unemployment was a factor in protests in Spain, uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa.

The connection between joblessness and violence comes to life in a timely August research paper Austerity and Anarchy: Budget Cuts and Social Unrest in Europe, 1919-2009, which found "a clear positive correlation between fiscal retrenchment and instability." Authors Jacopo Ponticelli and Hans-Joachim Voth examined the relationship between spending cuts and a measure of instability they termed CHAOS -- "the sum of demonstrations, riots, strikes, assassinations, and attempted revolutions in a single year in each country."

Their conclusion: Austerity breeds anarchy. More cuts, more crime. This clickable graph helps to tell the story.

Most of these punks never had a job, and they only reason they're rioting is because they are now have no choice but to get one. Liberal loser punks don't riot because they're unemployed. They riot because they want to be unemployed, on someone else's dime.

“The Great Recession gave birth to a lost generation across the world, where youth unemployment rates stretch into the 20s, 30s and even 40s. Those millions have responded with violence.”

Another duh moment.

Is he talking about the great recession that began in 1930 and continued to the beginning of World War II.

That ‘lost’ generation went on to win World War II, build the largest economy in the free world, and defeat Communism. Bunch of losers. They’ll never accomplish what our current, ‘intelligently’ raised and educated young people will. (Goat strangling sarcasm - OFF).

Well then... if cuts cause anarchy and we shoot to kill all anarchists that are rampaging... will that not solve the problem through attrition?

Please.

“Austerity” didn’t cause this. These people were out looking for free stuff. I think we will soon learn that many of these people weren’t even poor.

The spending cuts have absolutely nothing to do with the riots. Nothing.

I believe that these riots and acts of gang violence both here and abroad are being orchestrated for a reason.

Who are the community agitators behind all this. And what plans do they have for the US?

I suspect the violence will get a whole lot worse in the US as we approach the 2012 election.

These are not kids upset “by spending cuts.” They are petty thieves, malcontents and vandals.

“For the last year, Great Britain has embraced austerity to a degree that would make some American conservatives blush.”

Nonsense. Great Britain started from a position of a much greater social welfare system, so whatever positive gains they have made in the form of austerity only serves to move them a little closer to our current system. (But, we’re moving rapidly toward them, too).

I’d use the word product rather than refuse. Socialism creates dependence based upon need not merit. When support is diminished its dependents lash out. When you feed a bear you better not run out of food.

Brussels or Amsterdam will be the next big cities to burn. When the welfare runs out for the huge muslim populations they will do what they do best, riot and burn.

(I’m not including Paris because they were first to burn)

The WWII “lost generation” was at the root of European socialism.

Let me explain:

The loss of male family providers was very high in European participants and socialism was a logical solution to caring for those affected - housewives and children.

Some nations lost 5-8% of population to the war, much higher concentrations of working-age males, leaving gaping holes in the local economies and family support groups.

That is exactly what those from the UK are saying on FB about the rioters. Most would not get a job even if they were plentiful because they have never known anyone with one.We are now facing the same situation in the USA with 4th and 5th generation welfare recipiants.
