Spokesman says Texas Gov. Rick Perry is running for president, announcement planned Saturday

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Gov. Rick Perry is running for president, a spokesman confirmed Thursday, a move certain to shake up the race for the GOP nomination much to the delight of conservatives looking for a candidate to embrace.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner said the governor would make his intentions known on Saturday while visiting South Carolina and New Hampshire just as most of his presidential rivals compete in a test vote in Iowa.

Official word of Perry’s entrance into the race came just hours before eight candidates, including GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, were to appear on stage during a nationally televised debate.

It wasn’t much of a surprise. The longest-serving governor in Texas history has flirted with a presidential run since spring and has spent the past few months courting Republicans in early voting states and laying the groundwork for a campaign. He met privately with potential donors from California to New York and gave rabblerousing speeches to party faithful, casting himself as a fiscally responsible social conservative.

His intentions became even clearer over the past few days when officials disclosed that he would visit an important trio of states, a campaign-like schedule timed to overshadow the debate and the Iowa straw poll and, perhaps, wreak havoc on a field led by Romney.

Ignoring the kooks isn’t very easy when they are the one you see on the NBC Evening News, writing the copy on the Daily Show, controlling what you see in a Google Search, and running your local TV Station.

I’ve said for over a decade that the biggest thing most here miss is just how powerful Media propaganda really is today, and how much a part of society it has become.

Very much so. The big money folks involved with the RNC didn't get their amnesty, I mean guest worker program, that they wanted Bush and McCain to push through, but with Perry they definitely will. Unlike Bush and McCain, he's going to put his 10 years of pro-illegal alien talk into action, and he's going to gain big when it comes to Hispanic votes, once they realize how friendly he is towards LULAC and the other pro-illegal groups.

I've been busy for most of the last month and haven't had time to read up on the trends, but I should have saw it coming. Once Perry's folks killed off the sanctuary city bill in the Texas legislature, it should have been obvious where things were headed. Obama better watch it, if Perry pushes as hard for the illegal aliens between now and November as he has over the last decade, he'll have the support of the major Hispanic groups and Obama will be finished.

Just to clarify, if Perry's supporters hadn't killed off the sanctuary cities bill and Perry had been forced to sign a anti-sanctuary cities bill, it would make it a lot tougher for him among some Hispanic groups on a national level. There was a reason why he spoke out against Arizona-style legislation for Texas - he was probably thinking it would hurt him in a national run.

It'll be interesting to see if the Texas chapter of LULAC comes out for him, since he's supported and praised them in the past.

Hey move to Texas where we have created more jobs than the rest of the 49 states combined.

So should we give the Democratic Governors of Texas in the '70s and '80s credit for the oil boom jobs? I think not. Jobs are going to be created in Texas regardless of who is in office, thanks to Texas' location, natural resources, power grid, the history of corporations in Texas, the many universities of Texas, and other factors that have nothing to do with the governor.

The jobs thing is funny. I saw somebody praising Electronic Arts for hiring more people in Austin and Perry was in front of the camera trying to take credit. Electronic Arts was the same company that bought up some Austin game companies and moved them to California back in the 1990s and early '00s.

Yep. I agree. It is a huge factor, but it will be for any nominee, and I believe Perry has the potential to be able to get around it to win. A lot of swing voters will respond to the guy’s record on jobs and growth. I am hoping he does well, because I am a huge fan of a lot of these candidates, but I feel like a seasoned executive candidate with a track record is the best route to victory. He has to show some real backbone in the primary, because the left is going to be prepared for the battle of the century next year to destroy our candidate.

Please tell us - who is the “real conservative” you have in mind?. There is not one in the field that is perfect, and that would include my favorite Palin if she jumped in. But compare this field of candidates with that of this time in 2007 - then we are light years to the Right of where we were then.

I think she will say something to the effect of "I am really excited to see and hear what Perry has to offer. I knew him well from the time we were governors and he's a strong conservative candidate with a great record."

She's already said something along those lines back in June during her bus tour....

In fact, during the midst of her recent bus tour, Palin brought Perry’s name up again, unprompted, telling a group of reporters in Baltimore, “I think he would be a fine candidate. We have a lot in common.” She added: “I really like him.” SOURCE

...so I would expect her to ramp it up quite a bit with him actually in the race.

Obama will be using the same remarks as you to discredit Perry. This will be the exact tactic and it won't work for him either. You have to work hard not to give the governor of any state credit for the economy in that state, especially when he's been governor for 10 years

Do you actually think voters will say "oh gee, he's been governor of Texas for 10 years but Obama said he didn't do anything to generate those jobs"

Then Obama will say "Yeah but Texas has a weak Governors office,all the power rests in the Lt. Governor"

And Perry will say, yeah I was elected as the first Republican Lt. Governor ever elected in Texas.

Yes, let's compare it to 2007 - you had a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-gun control candidate by the name of Rudy Giuliani being championed by Rick Perry, and you had the illegal immigrant loving John McCain, among the most prominent names.

Here in 2011, among the most prominent names, you have Mitt "Romneycare" Romney, and Rick "I love Guest Workers and Rudy Giuliani" Perry. Boy howdy, that's change we can all believe in!

It's a valid argument though - do you really want somebody taking credit for something they don't deserve? The factors that make Texas such a success have existed long before Rick Perry was even born. It's why there were wars fought over Texas.

Funny how Democrat Rick Perry didn't become a Republican until after Reagan was well on his way out of the White House, lol. Rick's got much more serious baggage than that. He supported a pro-abortion candidate for President in 2008 and plenty of people won't forgive supporting a pro-abortion candidate for President, and those people will turn out in the primaries.
