What ever happened to Matthews. He was always a Democrat, but he used to be a sensible guy. I once loved his show. I think he is mentally sick.
Matthews is what he is. An old hack who worked as a speechwriter for Jimmy Carter and then Tip O’Neill the drunk.
Ratings are king. He is employed by a network that went far left, and his ratings stunk. Rabid lefties didn't want to hear from a centrist type Democrat, and conservatives had long ago stopped watching MSNBC. He didn't really have much choice other than to take his show to the far left.
It's kinda sad. As you said, he was always a Democrat, but I always got the feeling he loved politics first and foremost and wasn't a fringe nut. To remain on that network with bookends like Al Sharpton and Lawrence O'Donnell, he pretty much has to be as wacky as them.
He went completely nuts after Bush was re-elected.

Yes. A couple of decades ago he used to a lot of fun to watch. Definitely a liberal, but sort of gentle and wry, observant and with a sense of humor. Now he is just a rabid, nasty, leftist hack.
I agree on the mental illness and will not be surprised if he pulls a Mitch Snyder in the still hours some dark night. Cynical leftist opportunists like Teddy Kennedy, Barney Frank, John Kerry etc. are just playing for personal gain and power, and can accept failures and setbacks with a shrug as the cost of doing business. True Brave New World believers on the other hand are prone to complete despair when their idols crumble, or remain stubbornly mute.

Within months he was retired and last we heard he developed Alzheimers pretty quickly after that.
Chris sounds much like he did during that period between the robbery and his retirement. Even some of the same breaks in logic.
Someone on Rush’s show said he was possessed by Ted Kennedys ghost. I had forgotten that Chris used to fill in for Rush back in the early 90’s! He has gone off the deep end.
