In 1981, Houston, Texas had 701 murders. That seems high to me.

I worked in the N. Shepherd and 610 area where much of those murders took place back then. At times is was like a war zone. I actually thought the number was a bit higher that that though. I do remember that we had the distinction at the time of being the murder capital of the nation during those murderous years.
