Perry tests his Texas twang in key states (Here comes the Lame Stream Media mockery)
washington post ^ | 8/14/2011 | By Nia-Malika Henderson

Rick Perry, who entered the 2012 GOP race Saturday, greeted his first crowd of voters here with two words rarely heard in these parts: with a wave, he let out a boisterous “Hi, y’all” to a crowd clad in khakis and button ups gathered around a backyard pool.

There was also this: “Y’all holler outta question” to open up a question and answer session.

And this when it got going: “There’s hands going up everywhere, somebody just get after it.”

There were times when the three-term Texas governor sounded eerily like the “Saturday Night Live” version of George W. Bush, droppin’ every “g” and proclaiming “awesome” at nothing in particular.

His appearance raised the question that is at the center of his candidacy: Can Perry take his Texas twang on the road and meet voters where they live, in cities and suburbs and swing states?

Ha! Yes, I think you’ve captured the mirror-image assumptions quite well.

“Does anyone know which state has had the most Presidents.”

Virginia, but we have not had a Virginian President in a long time. Virginia scored lots of runs in the opening innings.

I am not particularly a Perry supporter. There are several things that he tried to do here in Texas that I thought were terrible!

My biggest hope is that Sarah will run.

Having said all of that, if the pubbies run Popeye as their candidate, I will vote for him. Anybody but Barack..............

I find it hard to believe that your #1 office in the state is worthless, that he doesn’t consult with the other leaders on policies or bills. How do they know he won’t veto it if they never even got his take on the issue? Seems strange.

Let the media mock, it won’t matter. Perry will be our next President, you can bet on it.

Wasn’t Perry Lt Gov. before he became Gov? How long did he hold that office?

It appears that somebody at the Washington Post has been reading my mail. This from my reply I posted on Friday:

Right now Gov. Perry seems to have the best balance of conservative values and electability. That does not mean that he triumphed [in] his absence last night as the author asserts. It means that he has a good record subject to complaints especially about immigration and he combines that record with an extremely good telegenic appearance. In that respect he ranks right up there with Romney. The problem for Perry is that he comes off too Texas and too much of a folksy shit kicker which people will describe as a resemblance to George Bush but which can turn off a lot of Easter and Northern voters who might as a result regard him as a masculine version of Sarah Palin.

So Gov. Perry must submit himself to the process like every other candidate and he must show that he can look presidential and avoid gaffes. He must to some degree mitigate his good ole boy image If he does so we can expect to emerge at the head of the pack and, most important, he can beat Obama.

Subsequent to posting these remarks, I watched Gov. Perry's announcement speech and I was disappointed not in content but in style. I make no criticism of the content whatsoever but I was disappointed because the speech lacked a thematic unity and it failed as a result to touch an emotional chord. The absence of that very necessary emotional element in a successful campaign speech, coupled with the awe shucks mannerisms and Chautauqua tent style, are identifiable negatives.

I certainly hope Perry is playing to the bleachers and can dial down the folksiness and increase the earnestness and authenticity. I hope he gets more coherence to a good substantive message and learns a better delivery. A political speech is not a laundry list of talking points. Above all he must evoke an emotional response and that is not obtained by shouting at the audience or by dropping your "g"s, it is obtained by a transparent commitment to a conservative message.

I hope Perry looks at the videotape of his own speech because the Washington Post is certainly watching.

Perry sounds like he's from somewhere.
Bachmann sounds like she's from somewhere.
Palin sounds like she's from somewhere.

Democrats believe that all the really smart folks aren't from anywhere at all. They spring up at Ivy league schools and talk like academics.

Like Jimmy Carter.

"Like Jimmy Carter."

Or Al Gore. Although, Gore could seem to turn that accent off and on sometimes.

His post was beyond suspicious and he would not state who he supports which is a red flag for these hit and run smear posters.
As I recall from my time in Austin that after the Civil War the Gov role was weakened.
Here is the scoop.

Perry admitted his frustration and apologized for getting out of the car. What more do you want? Your hatred of Perry has some really deep roots that I am wondering about. I was luke warm on Perry but the more ridiculous complaints you have about him makes me like him more.
