The Red Army only traded one set of chains for another.
The Red Army liberated the Soviet Union, they did not liberate the Captive Nations.
Presumably so, since it's already been cleaned off. I would think most of the trouble would be in keeping the runoff from staining the stone of the base, which is probably marble and somewhat porous. Getting the title paint off the base may have been bad.
From a far broader perspective than you are probably able to accept when the Americans and Russians occupied Europe that took them out of the business of war for the longest period in their history (as far as we can discuss that history) ~ goes back THOUSANDS OF YEARS.
Doesn't mean everybody was happy about it ~ and Joe Stalin and his cronies were brutal thugs and genocidal maniacs.
Look what they did to the Jews and Gypsies. There was a behavioral pattern being set up there that cannot be denied.
Much better art than the original, IMHO.
Instead, many of them went off to the Bulgarian Gulag, and it is that which will result in this memorial's eventually joining Tallinn's in that great Soviet War Memorial scrapheap in the sky, I expect.
"Swedish imperialists". LOL. Set the waback machine to "Way back". I visited the Vasa Museum in Stockholm a couple years ago, and apart from the ship itself, the lasting impression was of the findings of the anthropologists and osteologists, who determined that the average Swede of the time was an undersized illiterate starving peasant.
The Bulgarians were not headed to any ovens. Actually, they saved the Bulgarian Jews from being sent to the ovens and it cos tthe life of the Bulgarian czar at the time. In 1943 he went for a visit to Germany and came back in a coffin. Bulgaria was a German ally in WWII but never sent any troops to the Eastern Front. The Russians did not liberate anything, they did not have to fight in Bulgaria, just rolled in and installed a puppet commie government. The “poor” infantry men were stationed in the regular people houses, stealing, drinking, and often raping women even in front of their husbands and children. These “memorials” to the communist occupiers should have been dismantled 20 years ago but for the rabid opposition of the Bulgarian commies whose allegiance is to “Mother
Russia” first.
It was just a matter of time.
naturally.
But that would’ve been several generations into the future and by that time the drive to continue might’ve just petered out. the nazi master race breeding program was in place. Eventually all not meeting the master race standards would be done away with. but they couldn’t do everything at once...jews and gypsies first...mediteranean people at some later point in time. Even the irish and scottish people of the british isles did not meet the nazi standards. I would imagine finish, latvians, lithuanians, hungarians, estonians, and slovakians would also be considered inferior by nazi ideology.
Eventually they'd gotten around to the Norwegians.
Exactly. Stalin expected a long war in the West, which would have drained the British, French and German armies, which would have left the Soviets able to swoop in from the East.....they didn't count on France falling in six weeks.
Lets just play devil’s advocate for a moment and assume that the nazi belief about race is logical AND accurate. I still don’t understand their zeal to kill inferiors off so quickly. Seems to me a smarter hitler would’ve just rendered them sterile and continued to utilize their economic output.
Yeah, mixed emotions.
Of course, the populations of the former Warsaw Pact nations don’t exactly look at the Red Army memorials in quite the same way the Russians do.
A number have been targeted for artistic “improvement” in recent years. Which, of course, pisses off the Russians but since that’s pretty much what’s intended, it bothers the “artists” not at all.
This is pretty cool actually. You can tell it wasn’t a spur of the moment job. Someone, or probably some group, put some serious time into planning this.
It does not matter what I believe or not. You don’t know what could’ve happened. No one has the corner on shouda, coulda, woulda. See post 34. The historical fact is that not a single Bulgarian nor a single Bulgarian Jew went to the ovens. The other fact is that the vodka drinking Russian occupiers installed their puppet regimes all over Eastern Europe and practically enslaved millions of people for several decades. And that’s the truth whether it suits you or not. And notice that the MO is not any different regarding the countries fighting the Nazies or the ones allied with them. You can’t expect much love from the people you have opressed. BTW, do you have any Russian connections. You seem a little touchy on the subject?
Bet you thought only the Russians attacked that country.
