Confederate soldier stands his ground

Despite the Reidsville Confederate Monument officially departing his post on Scales Street, another soldier is taking his place and standing up for what he believes is right.

On Friday morning, Jamie Funkhouser, the confederate soldier who came to Reidsville in June to raise awareness for the city council meeting discussing the future of the monument, returned to bring awareness to the fact that the soldier will soon be moved.

The Reidsville Monument stood at the intersection of Scales Street and West Morehead Street for 101 years until Mark Anthony Vincent, of Greensboro, fell asleep behind the wheel of his car, knocking the statue off its pedestal and onto the hood of his car, shattering the statue.

According to a press release Tuesday afternoon, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Reidsville City Council agreed that replacing the monument on its pedestal would be a divisive factor in the community and it should be moved elsewhere.

Funkhouser said this statue has the same right to be there as any other war soldier. He also said that this soldier is not a race issue because all races fought under the confederate flag and people of all races have come and supported him Friday morning.

“If they remove this monument, it won’t keep me from coming back,” Funkhouser said. “I will come back here for years and be the Confederate soldier watching over Reidsville.”

The UDC is waiting word from the Vincent’s insurance company before deciding what to do with the monument.

Here is the case that decided the flag issue at Point Lookout: Point Lookout flag case.

As far as I know, that is the latest on the issue.

Interestingly, Chief Justice Roger Taney of Ex Parte Merryman fame, had a place at Point Lookout, at least he did right before the war. Here is my favorite quote from his Ex Parte Merryman order against Lincoln:

The constitution provides, as I have before said, that "no person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property, without due process of law." It declares that "the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated; and no warrant shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." It provides that the party accused shall be entitled to a speedy trial in a court of justice.

These great and fundamental laws, which congress itself could not suspend, have been disregarded and suspended, like the writ of habeas corpus, by a military order, supported by force of arms. Such is the case now before me, and I can only say that if the authority which the constitution has confided to the judiciary department and judicial officers, may thus, upon any pretext or under any circumstances, be usurped by the military power, at its discretion, the people of the United States are no longer living under a government of laws, but every citizen holds life, liberty and property at the will and pleasure of the army officer in whose military district he may happen to be found.

Isn't this the same as a deed?

Sorry, but it's not remotely the same thing as a deed. Not even close. Giving permission to erect a monument is not the same as granting fee simple title (or any title) to the Daughters of Confederacy to the land on which the monument was located.

And by granting permission wasn't it the intent of all concerned for that monument to not only be placed there but to remain there. Not to be moved the first time it was destroyed!!!

Well, you have two issues. The first is that there's nothing whatsoever in that newspaper article that states what the intent of the town commissioners was regarding the permanency of the monument. I'd guess they meant it to be permanent, but that's a guess.

Second, the act of a town commission reflects present intent. The same town commissioners, or subsequent town commissioners, may change their minds. It happens all the time. There are practical reasons that would normally act to keep them from changing their minds on many issues (public reaction, for example), but town commissions change their minds all the time. Example? Land zone for private land use is taken and rezoned as a public park. Or an abandoned and unused public park is rezoned and sold to a business moving into the community and bringing jobs.

None of us wants to live in a world where the act of a town commission regarding a use of land is set in stone for the rest of history.

During Robert E lee’s last years he was living at Washington College in Virginia. Maimed and crippled soldiers from both sides of the civil war would seek him out and ask for money or food. He always gave them something saying he was taking cars of “one of our boys.”

My question is why do yankees on a conservative forum care whether the state that lost more men in that war wish their deaths commemorated by statue

It’s not really their business.

I guess you didn't get the memo on that. It's no longer uncontested that North Carolina did lose more men in the Civil War than the other Confederate states (New York having lost the most of any state). Possibly they did lose more proportionately than other states, though that isn't clear either.

But where are Northerners even mentioned in the article? From what I can see, a Greensboro fellow crashed into the statue, and the UDC and the city aren't that into replacing it. No "yankees" involved.

Some people online praise the decision and others deplore it. Given that the whole Internet involves people not minding their own business, it's hard to see why the line should be drawn here.

It's also interesting that there may not even have been a town there in Civil War days, so the statue itself was a little revisionist or "imperialist" when it was put up.

Wow.

Things sure changed for the worse since I was there last.

This tears me:

“The constitution provides, as I have before said, that “no person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property, without due process of law.” It declares that “the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated; and no warrant shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” It provides that the party accused shall be entitled to a speedy trial in a court of justice. “

LOL!

Yeah, right.
Those days are gone.
Now they bust in, shoot your dog and and get a medal for it.

Just another happy little “unintended consequence” to enjoy.

Not.

I was referring to my ancestor’s side...I am unaware of the Union state with most loss and did not clarify..

It would stand to reason given the population it would be New York and given Union losses overall (as troops) that it would be bigger.

As for outsiders and southern statues...

Here in Franklin, an older Jewish woman from Los Angeles moved here and bought an historical home about 1999...she was immediately offended by the CSA memorial that had been on the square for precisely 100 years after replacing a smaller marker...Chip...named for the piece of floppy hat missing from a weather event....usual square CSA oblisk with trooper on top facing south.

She immediately tried to take all sorts of legal action and petitions to have it removed.

The townspeople wondered if she also intended to dig up the 1500 Confederate dead at McGavock cemetary...then the irony was pointed out to her that she indeed lived in a former Plantation home herself...their former town home on West Main.

Anyhow...she may have picked up a handful of supporters but got nowhere and eventually left to move on to more windmills as ardent progressives often do.

If you have an example of southerners going north and remonstrating northerners to ignore their history or “how we do things in Montgomery”, then please..by all means share

read wideawakes post

we are not thin skinned

we are just more polite and don’t run our mouths over nothing (without consequence) like your culture does

admittedly..it does have drawbacks..we kill each other a fair amount...though that might be a good thing..what it takes to preserve good manners

but...I swear even that is changing..go to urban Nashville and all the boys look like cakers...no threat to anyone but their rescue Yorkies

You forget about the part where she empties out the bank accounts, steals the cars, and demands the house, as compensation for her adultery...

Rather the southern oligarchs attempted to destroy the republic to preserved their peculiar institution, and were not permitted to do so.

As you can see...apparently some jewish lady from Los Angeles offended the cultural sensibilities of poor ole Wardaddy in his hometown a dozen years ago. Therefore...northern conservatives on FR are guilty of the same behavior.

He's been pushing various permutations of this pusillanimous slander for a long time. No surprise here.
