Villaraigosa calls for overhaul of Proposition 13
SacBee: Capitol Alert ^ | 8/16/11 | Dan Walters

In what could be an initial foray into statewide politics, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called Tuesday for a renewal of progressive politics in California in the nation, including an overhaul of the state's iconic limit on property taxes, Proposition 13.

"Progressives have to start thinking - and acting - big again," Villaraigosa declared in prepared remarks for the Sacramento Press Club, to counteract anti-tax and anti-government drives by the Tea Party and other conservative blocs.

"If the Tea Party in Washington and their counterparts here in Sacramento are intent on pitching jobs overboard in the mindless pursuit of ideology over country, we have to be willing to stand and defend our people," Villaraigosa said, adding, "And yes, that means making a case for new revenue to sustain long-term investment."

Villaraigosa was particularly critical of the spending cuts that Gov. Jerry Brown and the Legislature's Democrats made to balance the state budget after their efforts to extend some state taxes were rejected by Republicans. Those cuts, he said, will damage California's ability to educate its children and remain economically competitive.

"Governor Brown, I say we need to have the courage to test the voltage in some of these so-called 'third-rail' issues, beginning with Proposition 13," . . .

"Progressives" can't even bring themselves to say "new taxes". Instead they cloak it as "new revenue", "revenue enhancement", "increase revenue" so they don't continue to get tagged as tax and spend liberals.

I am sick of the Orwellian rhetoric...

The legislature can put a constitutional amendment on the ballot. Given the current and future demographics such an amendment would win and Proposition protections 13 will go.

Villaraigosa, damn you! Seems like every few years we have to fight to keep Prop. 13, even though the majority voted for it. We’re throwing in the towel, finally convinced the wife for us to get out of California. Going to the mid-west where some sanity remains.

You're right.

Maybe this is why Tony Villar (his birth name) built that super high fence around the L.A. mayor's mansion in spite of height limits.

He won't have to look at the devastation he causes.

It'll be like the Mexican cartels and corrupt Federales and their benefactors with him in their roll of creating endless misery to "save" people from.

He's a sick racist bastard.

“La Raza Mayor craps forth...”

Tony Villa (that’s his real name, not Villaragosa) is a former LA gang member and a permanent POS. But you won’t read about that little tidbit in the media or see it on CNN.

This mindless idiot is all La Raza all the time.

Pitching jobs overboard?
The lowest IQ legislature in history has done that all by itself, and it hasn't yet sunk in, evidently.

This will never happen; Prop 13 is the only defense for the taxpaying homeowners in California.
It has already been rendered less useful by redefining taxes as "fees."

Time for a more active TEA Party presence in California?

Revenues = Commie term for taxes.

"Investments" = commie term for more taxes.

I’ve been surprised how long the leftists in Sacramento have been willing to keep their greedy paws off of Prop 13.

It will be the tipping point. The sign, CA is well and truly scr*wed.

Never to rebound.

Villar, I think.

He stole “Raigosa” from the wife he cheated on. To sound more ethnic.

Didn’t know that. Oh well, it appears that you can take the gang-banger out of the barrio, but you can’t take the barrio out of the gang-banger.

Any FReepers know what his murdering, gang-banging, b!tch son is doing these days? I recall that Ahnold gave him a pardon. Is he back out on the street? If so, has he murdered anybody yet? (That’s another little tidbit we’ll never hear about in the news or on TV.)

I wonder what he thinks is going to happen when the latino home owners of this state realize that La Raza Mayor wants to take more of their Dinero?

I suspect they will drop-kick his butt to the curb when they realize “that”. Then again, most of them aren’t paying much in taxes anyways, and they will just assume that us “gringos” will pick up the slack.
