Agreed on the Labs. I had a male that needed to be rolled only once and he understood exactly where he fit in the family heirarchy. At the bottom and he is absolutely content to be there. It’s not in his nature to assert himself and he is controlled even at play.

He is the most loyal dog companion I have ever had.

Pits might just be a breed that is constantly trying to assert themselves, even in the human family hierarchy.

That brought tears to my eyes, and I know the feeling so well. My Labbie was literally the “World’s Friendliest Dog.” Now of course I must concede that there may have been other dogs who were tied for first. :)

And while she was friendly, she didn’t run up and jump on people. She was very empathetic towards people’s needs, would stand there wagging bodily, awaiting the invite. As she got older, and she experienced a few aches and pains of her own, she also learned to recognize human frailties, and acted accordingly. She would rough house when appropriate and invited, and would put her chin on your knee if that’s what was the right thing to do.

There’s nothing in God’s Earth quite like an old friend of the family dog who has been well treated all its life.
