Georgetown Basketball Brawl Breaks Out During Vice President Joe Biden’s China Visit

A bench-clearing brawl broke out at a goodwill basketball game in China between visiting U.S. team Georgetown and Chinese Bayi Rockets. Although he was not in attendance during this particular game, the brawl coincided with Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to the country.

According to the Washington Post and the Associated Press, the brawl erupted near the end of the tense game, then tied at 64. Tackles were made, punches were thrown and chairs and water bottles were sent aloft during the melee, which ended the game. As of press time there was no word if the two teams would meet in their previously scheduled matchup this Sunday night.

Although it was unclear if the brawl was sparked by a single incident of a culmination of tensions, the Chinese team reportedly has been fined many times for similar fights.

“Tonight, two great teams played a very competitive game that unfortunately ended after heated exchanges with both teams,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said in a statement. “We sincerely regret that this situation occurred.”

The article makes it sound like the Chinese team is even worse. I wonder which ones were doing best in the fighting?

“whimsical” probably means “racist”.
