Florida Teacher Suspended for Anti-Gay Marriage Posts on Personal Facebook Page
Fox News ^ | August 19, 2011 | Todd Starnes

A former “Teacher of the Year” in Mount Dora, Fla. has been suspended and could lose his job after he voiced his objection to gay marriage on his personal Facebook page.

Jerry Buell, a veteran American history teacher at Mount Dora High School, was removed from his teaching duties this week as school officials in Lake County investigate allegations that what he posted was biased towards homosexuals.

*snip*

Patton said Buell has taught in the school system for 22 years and has a spotless record. Last year, he was selected as the high school’s “Teacher of the Year.”

*snip*

Buell told Fox News Radio that he was stunned by the accusations. “It was my own personal comment on my own personal time on my own personal computer in my own personal house, exercising what I believed as a social studies teacher to be my First Amendment rights,” he said.

*snip*

The first was posted on July 25 at 5:43 p.m. as he was eating dinner and watching the evening news.

“I’m watching the news, eating dinner when the story about New York okaying same-sex unions came on and I almost threw up,” he wrote. “And now they showed two guys kissing after their announcement. If they want to call it a union, go ahead. But don’t insult a man and woman’s marriage by throwing it in the same cesspool of whatever. God will not be mocked. When did this sin become acceptable?”

Three minutes later, Buell posted another comment: “By the way, if one doesn’t like the most recently posted opinion based on biblical principles and God’s laws, then go ahead and unfriend me. I’ll miss you like I miss my kidney stone from 1994. And I will never accept it because God will never accept it. Romans chapter one.”

Separate school and state, before it's too late.

This is why you should not mix work and Facebook. Doesn’t make it right what’s being done, and we certainly know had he posted in favor of gay marriage, nothing would have happened, but being friends with co-workers runs these kinds of risks.

“Secular Progressivist” beliefs constitute a worldview no less than Judeo-Christian principles or Islamic sharia or tribal animism.

It is only by a semantic sleight-of-hand that the government may legally indoctrinate and enforce Secular Progressivism but not Judeo-Christianity or some other worldview.

This *screams* law suit. I hope he lawyers up. You can't be suspended for your religious beliefs expressed outside the work place. It is "set an example" time. The school system needs to pay through the nose so they learn their lesson. Otherwise, it will soon be a crime for a teacher to attend church.

The end is near. Society hasn’t learned the horrific lesson of Sodom and Gomorrah - this stuff is a like a virulent cancer that wants total domination. Here, today, it’s gone seamlessly from “Sodomy is OK” to “You can’t be against sodomy” and soon on its heels will be, “Normal marriage relationships are bad and should be banned” (prophesied in 1 Tim 4:3). Just like the other stuff that’s happened or is happening, this also will be denied and the denials believed by too many people until it’s too late.

Maybe I am a Luddite, but I would never use Facebook for anything. I value my privacy. What kinds of “friends” are facebook friends?

This is politically protected speech, and yes, he needs to sue.
There are groups who represent people like this free of charge but except for the ACLJ, I can’t think of their names.

Slippery slope ... the problem is not with Facebook. Could he be suspended for an "Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" bumper sticker? How about attending a Bible study where Leviticus is the topic of discussion? This is a free speech issue -- especially as exercised outside the work place. The school system has clearly overstepped its bounds.

If a government employee wore a shirt to work that bore the logo “Vote No on Directive 10-10289”, would that be a violation of the Hatch Act?

I don’t disagree. Befriending co-workers gives them access to your posts and pictures, but you’re right, this is the thought police at work.

Its a clear violation of free speech. The government has no right to control what a teacher says outside of school.

I think he’s got a case if he wants to sue. This is a government school, not a private one. The government can’t deny a citizen his right to express an opinion.
