Republicans Worried GOP Front-Runner Rick Perry Won't Appeal To Independent Voters
Business Insider ^ | 08/19/2011 | Zeke Miller

Congressional Republicans are worried that Rick Perry's campaign has become a gaffe machine that may endanger the party' chances of unseating President Barack Obama, POLITICO reports.

As the Texas governor takes on the role of front-runner, his statements, like the one critical of Fed chairman Ben Bernanke, have GOP lawmakers concerned that his campaign will self-destruct — or worse, win the nomination, but alienate the independent voters needed to win the general election.

“You can’t be calling Bernanke a traitor and you can’t be questioning whether or not Barack Obama loves America, that type of thing,” Rep. Peter King (R-NY), told POLITICO. “I’ve been with Perry a few times, and I can see how he could project, again, if it’s done the right way. But no, if he continues this, he’ll have a tough time.”

Another congressmen suggested Perry needs to rethink his strategy so as not to alienate independent voters. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL), a member of the GOP leadership said of the Bernanke comments: “That’s not something you want to lead with if you’re trying to get independents to come your way. I would imagine that he’s thinking through his strategy.”

I have a friend, who is an unabashed liberal. Straight-ticket Dem. Super Hippie-dippie-60's chick. Reads Daily Beast and Politico and HuffPo and DU and thinks that's reality.

She says, and she tells pollsters, she's 'independent'. Please understand, GOP, THESE are your 'independents'.

You mean Perry may not win NY? So what? If Jesus ran on the Republican ticket, He couldn’t win in the northeast or the left coast. And McCain, the darling of GOP big-wigs, didn’t win there either.

As long as Perry wins the South, which is adding electoral votes in every census, and the Mid-West, he’ll do fine.

Peter King has the backbone of a chocolate eclair.

Obama is an evil bastard who is screwing up America.

Bernanke is ANOTHER loser appointed by Bush II and carrie don by Obama.

Gutless GOP leadership like the kind exemplified by King is what put Obama in there in the first place.

Nothing Perry said is wrong - period.

Either someone is trying to blatently de-rail the campaign or Bank of America doesn’t mind offering deals in front of cameras.

“Bank of America, we will help you out.”

He doesn’t appeal to this Republican.

Looks like Rick waited for the ladies to do all the heavy lifting.

Zimbabwe! Does Perry support abolishing ObamaCare, Sarbanes–Oxley, and the IRS in favor of a flat 10% sales tax?

Palin was not included in that pol as she is still undeclared.

It was a survey of 1,000 Likely GOP Primary Voters

They should be more worried that as his record is published the conservatives won’t turn out for him either. It’ll be amusing to see if he speaks up on Obama’s unilateral DREAM act that is modeled after what Perry instituted.

I’m a independent voter and he appeals to me. Of course the reason I am independent these days is because my core beliefs are well to the right of the GOP.

RE: Does Perry support abolishing ObamaCare, Sarbanes–Oxley, and the IRS in favor of a flat 10% sales tax?

It isn’t fair, but a ‘yes’ answer to the above question will make the GOP establishment EVEN MORE WORRIED, and of course, open him up to the attack that he really is nothing but an unhinged rabble rouser.

IMHO, this clearly contradicts the inference by some here that Governor Perry is somehow the ‘Establishment GOP’ choice.

You are spot on haws! I got hammered yesterday for saying Perry was an establishment candidate. Sad thing is, some conservatives are falling for it thinking Perry is on their side. Ha! Not a chance.

Main Street Americans are angry at Wall Street, their incestous influence in Treasury, SEC and Fed Reserve. They know that the bankers using Treasury lied about TARP and stimulus money funded by taxpayers. Many of these funds were sent overseas to bailout foreign banks and rest used by domestic banks to buy treasuries and high frequency trading. Nothing was left for Main Street except tougher regs that the too big to fail can afford but small and medium competitors would go bankrupt trying to meet. In other words Wall Street and fed gov used the crisis to write regs to kill off small business in the name of reforming the system. Gov Perry senses this popular anger and with it he will win the GOP primary and win the election in 2012 with many independent voters. GOP establishment is acting as sock puppets for Wall Street bankers who know that the American public knows about their schemes and the jig is up except for the public hangings needed to mete out justice for the scams and fraud.

You're dead on, Laz. When I read the comments posted on Politico from "independents", I expect to see pictures of the "WTF Cat".

"Independents" are libs that are ashamed to admit they voted for Obama.

Can you name another establishment candidate, past or present, that openly discussed seceding from the Union?
