Rick Perry Slams Food Stamps, Government Subsidies
The State Column ^ | August 21, 2011 | Staff

Texas Governor Rick Perry, the latest GOP candidate to enter the 2012 presidential race, looks to challenge former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s status as the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. Perry entered the race on August 13th after announcing his candidacy at an event in South Carolina. Perry’s announcement, which stole the spotlight from the Ames Straw Poll, put to rest several months of speculation about the Texas Governor’s decision to run for the GOP nomination.

During his presidential announcement, Perry said “we cannot afford four more years of this rudderless leadership.” Perry also added that “page one of any economic plan to get America working is to give a pink slip to the current resident in the White House.”

Ever since his presidential announcement in South Carolina, Perry’s criticism of the Obama administration has been relentless. More recently, Perry criticized the Obama administration’s comments on food stamps or the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

This week, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said “when you talk about the SNAP program or the food stamp program, you have to recognize that it’s also an economic stimulus.” Vilsack also added that “it’s the most direct stimulus you can get in the economy during these tough times,” because of the work that goes into an item of food before it ends up in the grocery store.

While campaigning in South Carolina on Friday, Perry slammed the Obama administration’s view of food stamps and other government subsidies. “Most Americans do not yearn to be dependent on government subsidies, they want economic freedom, and economic freedom comes from work and wages, not welfare,” Perry argued.

One of the focal points of Perry’s presidential campaign is the longest serving Texas Governor’s record on job creation. Forty percent of the nation’s new jobs have been created in the Lone Star State since June 2009. “Our message is clear, we’ve got to get America working again,” Perry said during a campaign stop in South Carolina on Saturday.

Perry believes strongly that government subsidies, such as food stamps, shouldn’t be on the government’s list of responsibilities. “The central issue of this election is an Administration that believes Washington must be our caretaker, and a people who want Washington to only take care of their constitutional responsibilities,” Perry professed.

Besides reiterating his belief that food stamps aren’t “economic stimulus,” Perry talked about the need to focus on the private sector when it comes to job creation. “We have tried two and a half years of government trying to create jobs, it’s time to let the private sector get to work,” Perry argued.

I deal with people using foodsramps everyday. What I see and hear makes me sick. Some are using 2 cards now and I cannot say a thing about it at work.

It is a lifestyle and some have had their cards for upwards of 8 years and are proud of it, even arrogant.

What a great idea. I was kinda wondering how to put the welfare mom’s to work. Perfect idea...I also think everyone on Welfare must be drug tested. They are drug tested at various times...not ever knowing when they’ll be tested. A paramed service just shows up at their door...if they hide and not allow the test...welfare funds are stopped immediately...

Here’s how welfare worked in Kansas (under Sibileus): there was not a state-wide limit as to how many ‘lost’ welfare cards could be replaced. One city finally attached a limit of ten. The statewide record of replacement welfare cards given to one recipient: 59. That’s fifty-nine.
That, and other such stuff, is changing.

The private sector is scared to do anything at this point because of all the uncertainty out there all due to Obama of course. 2012 can’t come soon enough for me.

"During his presidential announcement, Perry said “we cannot afford four more years of this rudderless leadership.” Perry also added that “page one of any economic plan to get America working is to give a pink slip to the current resident in the White House.”

This is strategically politically dumb. This means we have to wait until January 20, 2013 before we can expect economic improvements. Like I said, politically dumb.

I have an idea, the House GOP, the Senate GOP and the GOP Presidential candidates should get together and put together bills for turning the economy around. The House GOP would then place the bills and the pressure would then be on the Democrat Party as a whole, Senate Democrats specifically and Obama in particular. They would then be seen to stand in the way of economic growth.

Here's some ideas to include: Energy Freedom Act - unleash our American companies to produce energy from our American natural resources. End the Gulfatorium, release ANWAR, release Fracking, bind the idiotic regulations from the EPA.

Labor Freedom Bill - prevent the National Labor Relations Board from first and foremost stopping Boeing's plan to build planes in South Carolina, and reverse all kinds of labor regs.

Economic Freedom Act - reverse all kinds of regulations coming out of the Obama Administration.

Cost of Taxation Act - reduce to cost of compliance with tax laws through radical simplication. Eliminate tens of thousands of IRS jobs, including the 16,000 intended to be added for ObamaCare.

Health Freedom Act - Allow health insurance purchases across state lines, eliminate regulations that prevent MSA and crowd out individual insurance plans.

The political strategy bottom line for an opposition political party ought to be: We can wait any longer! I'm sure people have better ideas than I do for immediate incentives for economic growth (zero tax rate on repatriated profits). The plan ought to be to start now. The House GOP could put something out before Obama comes out with his stupid plan. Or get the whole gang together and come out with a response to the Obama "Grow Government Bigger" Plan.

This is what Boehner ought to have been doing. The GOP needs to show people what across the board GOP governance will be like with GOP control of the House, Senate and White House. They're sitting around expecting people to simply vote against Obama. The GOP are the Stupid Party, they earned that moniker.

WE CAN'T WAIT!!

Same here. I know I don't want Romney or Paul and except for me occasionally saying Paul is a nut, I am not constantly bashing like a few of you out there. Give it a rest OK?

Just like Romney.

I'm not trusting him yet, but he isn't just like Romney. He's much more likely sincere about pro-life. To some of us that makes a very big difference.

Bingo! The State of Michigan just kicked 30,000 students off of Food Stamps. And there’s outrage, OUTRAGE!

Welfare are the “labor force” that could be used in lieu of illegals. How’s that for brain work?

Perry’s going to be slapped down with that statement.

In the general election that is one thing but in the GOP Primary I don’t think there are a significant number of voters that would slap him down over that position.

That's my first question. A guy who gives away instate tuition to out of country students is certainly not a guy I would say who viscerally opposes government subsidies!

Add to all that, that the welware queens must:

1. NAME THE FATHER or no checks or housing. Go after him first, if he refuses send him to jail/prison. DNA everyone.

2. 1 child (a mistake, NOT), but no more. 2nd child is always on purpose, other than just being a SLUT anyway.

3. Those children must stay in school and learn something, therefore reduce the amount the mothers get IF their child makes below a C, reduce for truanancy as well.

I see these teenage thugs (with their pants to the ground, underware showing), walking the streets often during school session, their mothers need to be held responsible.

I'm sure the mothers are just waiting at home for all the goodies these thugs can steal, I want a Pepsi and chips, don't forget that SON./sar. (my good little son, who don't nevva does nuttin wrong.)

Can’t agree with that unless it includes the fathers of those kids as well.

The “anchor baby” thing is an administrative determination. You have people reading more into that statement than is really there ~ it can be reversed, and since it’s just administrative and not based on any law, it’ll reverse the citizenship status of all those who previously benefited from it ~ as well as their offspring.
