Rick Perry Slams Food Stamps, Government Subsidies
The State Column ^ | August 21, 2011 | Staff

Texas Governor Rick Perry, the latest GOP candidate to enter the 2012 presidential race, looks to challenge former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s status as the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. Perry entered the race on August 13th after announcing his candidacy at an event in South Carolina. Perry’s announcement, which stole the spotlight from the Ames Straw Poll, put to rest several months of speculation about the Texas Governor’s decision to run for the GOP nomination.

During his presidential announcement, Perry said “we cannot afford four more years of this rudderless leadership.” Perry also added that “page one of any economic plan to get America working is to give a pink slip to the current resident in the White House.”

Ever since his presidential announcement in South Carolina, Perry’s criticism of the Obama administration has been relentless. More recently, Perry criticized the Obama administration’s comments on food stamps or the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

This week, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said “when you talk about the SNAP program or the food stamp program, you have to recognize that it’s also an economic stimulus.” Vilsack also added that “it’s the most direct stimulus you can get in the economy during these tough times,” because of the work that goes into an item of food before it ends up in the grocery store.

While campaigning in South Carolina on Friday, Perry slammed the Obama administration’s view of food stamps and other government subsidies. “Most Americans do not yearn to be dependent on government subsidies, they want economic freedom, and economic freedom comes from work and wages, not welfare,” Perry argued.

One of the focal points of Perry’s presidential campaign is the longest serving Texas Governor’s record on job creation. Forty percent of the nation’s new jobs have been created in the Lone Star State since June 2009. “Our message is clear, we’ve got to get America working again,” Perry said during a campaign stop in South Carolina on Saturday.

Perry believes strongly that government subsidies, such as food stamps, shouldn’t be on the government’s list of responsibilities. “The central issue of this election is an Administration that believes Washington must be our caretaker, and a people who want Washington to only take care of their constitutional responsibilities,” Perry professed.

Besides reiterating his belief that food stamps aren’t “economic stimulus,” Perry talked about the need to focus on the private sector when it comes to job creation. “We have tried two and a half years of government trying to create jobs, it’s time to let the private sector get to work,” Perry argued.

I think number one should be anyone getting public assistance has to pass a urine test first.

Go after him first, if he refuses send him to jail/prison. DNA everyone.

You want the government to forcibly extract DNA just on some woman's say so? Some woman with already questionable scruples? Nuts.

Plus as far as I'm concerned there should be no mandatory child support until abortion is outlawed. If women have 100% of the decision making as to whether a child dies or lives, then they have to bear 100% responsibility of raising it.

That's why we have so much abortion, divorce, and illegitimacy. Because one side gets to make all the decisions and the other side gets the bill.

Palin isn’t running and I hope Rick Perry would get out of the race because he doesn’t represent me or my beliefs, it has nothing to do with Sarah.

Ok, now you give me an ironclad definition of "public assistance" that doesn't eventually lead to the entire population facing mandatory drug testing.

I wonder how many of the jobs "created" in Texas just represent the movement of jobs and companies from other states.

I’m thinking you work in a grocery? At our local mini-mart ( we live in the county & so we stop for the cheapest gas, maybe a loaf of bread or eggs if we did not make it to town, etc) & the last time I was in there a woman was buying luncheon meat sliced to order, chips, candy bars & soda drinks...............ALL w/ her EBT card!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) My 76 year old mother cannot do that & that’s where I feel beyond mad.

But & this scares me, I truly don’t see an end to it as it has gotten so big. The same for public education; it’s now completely beyond reform.

I know you must have to pinch yourself from speaking up or slugging someone!

I’d like to see mandatory drug testing for all welfare recips. If Home Depot [and most other other places] require it to draw a paycheck, why not “gubmint paychecks”?

Social Security and Medicare too? How about an ethanol subsidy? How about a grain price support program? How about a manufacturing development grant?

How are you going to put this drug testing regime in place where it doesn't continually expand (as all government initiatives do) to have mandatory testing of everybody but mountain hermits?

Perry’s not my guy, but that’s not slamming food stamps—that’s slamming poverty and unemployment in the Obama economy.

You can tell the difference between them and the ones who do it by choice, though.

I stand and watch them in their designer clothes, pull their Gubmint debit cards out of designer handbags they bought at Marshalls for $169 instead of the “regular price” of $279 and then load their *carts* [yes, plural] into the back of their Lexus SUV and drive a 1/4 mile back to their Section 8 mansions which *used* to be McMansions that went underwater during the housing collapse.

-Real- need users aren’t dressed like that, have purses or cars like that and their *cart* is full of essential stuff, not Little Debbies and lobsters.
Nor do they act or look “arrogant” about it, quite the opposite, in fact.
[God bless them]

It makes me sick.

I have nothing against those who -need- them due to the loss of their honest day’s work; it’s the fat slobs who get them because they feel “entitled”.

Weed those out and I’ll be happy.

Random drug testing for welfare recipients - I love it!

I was a foodstamp caseworker in the late ‘70’s. Home visits were home horrors for those tasked to do them.

In the military I had to p** in the bottle so many times.... then they assigned me to an administrative separation board that dealt with those who popped hot....BWAHAHAHA!

So I say drop a cup on those deserving beneficiaries anytime and unexpected. Probably best to do it on government turf and safer too.

We are not talking about all men in all instances. ONLY those who donate their sperm 24/7 in the gettos. Yes, DNA for food stamps/housing.

These low life's have no moral compass, they are producing children every damn night, with every welfare whore in the neighborhoods and beyond. Producing sibling's to every other child they have already spawned, and these siblings will NEVER know about their Bros' & Sis's, spawing with each other next. Now just think of the future in that. Talk about dumbing down society.

Hell, a 15 year old sperm donor has a child with his whore. The child does not know her PAPA, next she may be laying in bed with him when she turns 13/14. What a future. DNA works.

I’m picturing one huge welfare queen here that would slap you into the middle of next week for even suggesting that.

You honestly think she’d ruin her air-brushed acrylic nail extensions doing manual labor?

I hope you’ve got the guts to ask her because she’s about 8 times my size and has an “attitude” that makes Godzilla seem sweet....LOL

My husband and I watched the video posted on this thread of the food stamps that were accidentally cut off in one GA county. One day, one county; can you imagine 1 week or longer nationwide?

Another idea...make people prove they have health insurance in order to purchase an HDTV or Cell Phone...

I should have holes in my tongue from biting it. I have wanted to slap a few of them.

They buy junk food on EBT or steaks and expensive things. It’s a wide swing with some. It just makes me ill to think I’m working my fingers to the bone while paying taxes and lazy fools like this don’t have to do a thing,

What are you afraid of?

You know. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING funded by taxpayer money.

I have to pass a pi$$ test to keep my job. What is good for me is good for everyone else. Line up. If you are already standing around with your d### in your hand, might as well put forth a little effort and prove you deserve to be standing around with your d### in your hand.

People who have SS and Medicaire paid into the system and they -worked- to earn it.

You don’t have to pay diddly squat into anything to get welfare.

Odds are pretty good that *those* people already have been subjected to drug tests.

Hubby worked at the state prison and he had a date with the cup regularly, just like all the other guards and employees.

Before that, he worked for Mack, Pangborn and Fairchild as a welder/metal fabricator.

They all randomly test employees.

Before that, he was a long haul truck driver and had to pass drug screenings all the time.

IMO, if you’re milking the government cow, the cow has a right to make sure your hands are clean.
