The National Park Service says engineers have found cracks in the stones atop the Washington Monument, shutting down the area indefinitely.
The cracks were discovered during a secondary inspection after Tuesday's earthquake. Structural engineers will evaluate the cracks on Wednesday to determine the best way to repair the Monument before it is reopened.
The Lincoln and Jefferson memorials have reopened after being closed for several hours following the earthquake.
The park service says all monuments and memorials on the National Mall, including the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, were initially closed after the 5.8-magnitude quake struck at 1:51 p.m. But the King memorial and several others were reopened within an hour. Visitors continued to flock to the King memorial Tuesday afternoon.
The National Cathedral also remains closed Wednesday. Three of the four corner spires cracked during the quake and fell onto the roof. Engineers determined the structural integrity of the cathedral was not damaged.
The Old Post Office Tower will open on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.
Two new shovel ready jobs?
I read that Krugman said the damage was not big enough
Wow, it looks like it was just sitting up there?
Bush’s fault!
Rove must have found the keys to the weather machine again.
The Founding Fathers may be sending us a subtle message from the great beyond....
Great. How many trillions of dollars will have to be funneled to Bamboozle’s Union buds to repair this?
This isn’t significant enough to disturb Obama’s vacation.
I saw a very quick video of the White House during the quake. There were approximately 10 figures dressed in black running around on the roof. I assume they are the normal “protection” guards that are stationed on the roof. My question is: Wouldn’t it make more sense for them to be dressed in white instead of black??
“This isn’t significant enough to disturb Obama’s vacation.”
A well timed return to washington to inspect the damage might be a good idea politically.. but King Barry will return to Camelot on the day of his choosing.
seriously, this guy is not that good at politics. he smiled and glad-handed while he rode the media wave in 2008. He is not a good politician. this is a slam dunk to return to dc. he misses so many opportunities like this, I am tired of hearing what a genius he is. If he was, he would be able to put aside ego and play politics.
Farrakan’s men only wear black.
The only way they’ll pay attention is if the good Lord sends a blue bolt out of the clear blue sky to fry slobbering Barney Franks (and a few others) on the Capitol steps.
Cracks can be found in the US Constitution also but don’t blame the earthquake. The liberal inch deep foundation is constantly shifting and unstable. A living, breathing, progressively changing foundation at that and the Constitution just can’t keep up dontchyaknow....
The cracks appear in Washington.
Bingo! We have a winner!
If it wasn’t an earthquake signaling God’s displeasure with our Republic, it was our forfathers turning over in their graves.
