WASHINGTON -- After much delay, the White House has finally released a proposed rule that would update child labor regulations in agricultural work. Put forth by the Department of Labor last fall, the rule had been stuck in red tape at the White House for nine months, angering workplace safety advocates who said the regulations need to be modernized.
Although the rule still has not been made public, public health officials believe it will restrict minors from engaging in certain dangerous work activities on farms and perhaps grain facilities. As reported last week by HuffPost, safety advocates claimed that recent accidents involving juveniles may have been prevented had the rule not been held up at the White House's Office of Management and Budget.
“[A]fter so many tragedies involving young workers, OMB finally came to understand the pressing need for this regulation," Justin Feldman, a worker health and safety advocate at watchdog group Public Citizen, said in an email. "At this point we’ll have to wait for the text. I understand that OMB made changes to the Department of Labor’s proposal and it remains to be seen whether or not the revised proposal will be as robust as the original."

In past eras a politician would have feared being tarred, feathered, then pitchforked to death if he tried to screw with their livelihoods.
He's after those Amish terrorist farmers, making all that cherry furniture that burns up and using their young'uns for cheap labor.
He'll take those kids off the farm and put'em into some nice, safe inner city projects.
So the parents of the 14 year old Kansas kids driving the unlicensed old pickup to help with the harvest are probably now violating how many federal laws. Not saying its going to stop. Just curious how many laws are being broken.
This is true. All the regulations coming out of that damned swamp on the Potomac have the result of pushing out more and more little operations. Not just farming.
This is for two reason (more I haven't thought or, probably). Big guys cough up more money, and one big nationwide farming operation is a helluva lot easier to control that 1,000,000 little ones.
This is not about the rights of farmers to enlist their own children to work the farm. This is about farmers who knowingly hire illegal aliens and turn a blind eye to the illegal alien wranglers who bring in children, too. They can pick strawberries just as easily, perhaps better.
Since farmers won’t do the right thing, the nanny-state’s gonna come in and do it for them. Unfortunately, that means their ability to enlist their own kids to work the farm gets caught up in the nanny-state net. Too bad. They brought this on themselves.
