William jacobson, a very conservative/libertarian professor at Cornell. Yes I know Cornell, posted the sentencing remarks of Judge william Young in 2003 when he sentenced the show bomber. I had never read this. There are so many wrongheaded judges it was thrilling to read this one. here are a few things this judge said to shoe bomber Reid; "This is the sentence that is provided for by our statutes. It is a fair and a just sentence. It is a righteous sentence. Let me explain this to you.
We are not afraid of any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid. We are Americans. We have been through the fire before. There is all too much war talk here. And I say that to everyone with the utmost respect. You are not an enemy combatant. You are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war. You are a terrorist. To give you that reference, to call you a soldier gives you far too much stature. It seems to me you hate the one thing that to us is most precious. You hate our freedom. Our individual freedom. Our individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to believe or not believe as we individually choose."
You really will want to read the whole thing and I bet some of you will stand up and cheer this judge. http://legalinsurrection.com/2011/08/judge-william-young-sentencing-the-shoe-bomber/

This is refreshing, to say the least. Thanks for posting it.
I like where this is headed. I appreciate the post very much. Please allow me to touch on one point though.
“William jacobson, a very conservative/libertarian professor at Cornell...”
Vs
“William Jacobson, a reasoned professor at Cornell, displaying a good conservative libertarian foundation...”
It is a disservice to both Conservatism and Libertarian belief systems, to frame these thoughts as having to come from someone who was “very” anything.
A reasoned person with normal Conservative or Libertarian leanings would see things the same way this professor did.
Using the marginalizing word “very” seems inappropriate to me.
I know this is somewhat petty, but the media tries to marginalize us all the time, and I don’t want to see us feed into that on any level.
Thank you for bringing that to our attention. It was very good.
