“Reagan’s rule was to never do this and point to the other GOP’s weakness or opposing views. The libs will take this and run with it come election.

What some are doing to Perry here could well put Obama back in for another 4 years. God help us if that happens.”

I very much agree with you. People can share concerns on policy without utterly ripping apart our conservative candidates. That sort of action certainly DOES imitate the liberal modus operandi.

“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16

EXACTLY...the dims are loving it!

RS turned this mess into a highly publicized over-hyped mega drama. The first I read about it was on RS. Even their own explanation seems tortured, very defensive, and quixotic.

Forgetting the Palin angle for the moment, they are dumping on Radtke big time. Maybe she did give a bad speech and went over her time (I’ve yet to see a meeting where speakers didn’t go over time, and usually far worse than the 10 minutes Radtke took).

Then they start tossing out innuendos and 3rd party anonymous accusations, admitting they can’t personally substantiate them.

Well, if Radtke, per Erickson and RS, has no chance and Kaine is a fait acompli at 15+ months out, why do they care? Why spend two days posting numerous articles on this, including a 10 page dissertation on the events at the RSG?

If she’s a looser, why not just ignore her?

It makes no sense...they protest too much.

RS used to be a great source for highlighting liberal trickery and shenanigans. Lately its been much more inside baseball, high drama, and personalities.

I still can’t get over they’ve pronounced the Virginia senate seat lost 15 months out...talk about pre-mature surrender.

...and exactly what will prevent them from doing the same thing to Perry?

Nothing. They’re already at it.

Many conservatives and especially Republicans failed to take the media to task when they tried to destroy her. Now those same folks claim she is “too radioactive” to win.

That’s total capitulation. You just told our opponents they can do this to our best and brightest, and we’ll respond by pulling punches and no backing who we really want, and need.

Perry is my governor. I worked for him in 1990. He’s OK, better than most, and a whole lot better than zero. He’s also not a movement conservative, has no track record on reducing the size of government, and is a typical career politician primarily interested in amassing power. That is his record, he maintains the status quo and concentrates his power.

After zero, we can’t afford that. We need to undo the damage. NOTHING in Perry’s background suggests he can or will do that - NOTHING. He’ll be better than most, and he’ll slow down the rate of our demise, but not recover lost ground.

Palin beats him by a mile, and it is up to conservatives to stand up and do what’s right, so they can never try to pull this media assassination again.

"...be real, the mainstream press and Jay Leno jokes will kill her if she is on the ticket..."

If you've already abdicated your vote to whatever the talking box tells you, then whatever are you doing on FreeRepublic?

"(Perry) needs to get behind border control and not even think about amnesty for illegals, plus pledge to support balanced federal budgets..."

Funny, Palin doesn't have these issues, nor does she have a Gardasil event hanging over her. Of course, Jay Leno's jokes trump actual issues and principles, so...

"Rick Perry is conservative enough for me and is a winner."

I heard the exact same words from every McCain supporter I ever met in '08. He was electable, too, and people swallowed his skewed poll numbers like oleander honey.

The desperate parrying and proselytizing doesn't convert. What would convert is if Perry's record, principles, and courage under fire matched hers. They do not. Going from "Hope and Change" to "We hope he'll change" is not the example of American exceptionalism I see as worthy to lead this country.

Just google Perry Palin Microphone. One of the top hits is a short YouTube video of the exchange. You have to watch it a few times, and especially watch the wincing expression on Palin’s face. She’s clearly POed, but graciously contained, as always. Whereas Perry comes sweeping in to push a peer governor off the mic and taking it on himself to talk in her place. What was he thinking?

Classic line. Well said. And so very true. Look at all the failed marriages based on exactly the same misguided optimism. This may be one of the rare times we have a Democrat president so vulnerable we really don't have to settle for less. It would be a great shame to miss this opportunity out of manufactured fears.

Reagan’s rule was to never do this and point to the other GOP’s weakness or opposing views.

Um, not exactly. In his book he made clear that in his "11th Commandment" he was referring to debilitating personal attacks, of the kind that had occurred during certain of the GOP primaries. But he didn't start gaining traction against his primary opponents in 1979-80 till he started selling the differences. You have to do that. You cannot campaign against your primary opponents without making the contrast clear. Salesmanship 101. You don't sell generic. You sell brand. Brand is built on comparisons. That’s why brands exist. Just the way it is.

Palin, for example, can honestly say she kept her promises to the people of Alaska. Whereas Perry had to break a promise just to get in the race. Those facts are not in dispute, and therefore that subject matter is fair game, because character is an important qualification for the office. It's called vetting, and it's a good thing.

We just shouldn't let it get personal, like for example the slander machine here on FR that is constantly sowing a poisonous and unfounded suspicion that Palin is this evil mercenary just in it for the money, when in fact the evidence demonstrates she is exactly the opposite, a decent, honest person working hard for the good of her country. That's the sine quo non of a personal, below the belt attack, and Reagan would disapprove, I am quite sure.

It is a question of character. If Palin gets in she is going to destroy him on this issue alone.

Yes I did see your other post, and I agree with you entirely. She has proven herself uniquely worthy to hold the public trust. We are still waiting to see anything close in any of the others. I am already testing this weapon in certain Facebook debates. It is devastating. The would-be defender flings off all armor of reason and runs shivering for any cover he can find. I eagerly await her declaration: "Cry havoc, and unleash the dogs of war!"

Thanks for sharing that with me.

BTW, I really enjoy your writing. My father was an Attorney and my mother graduated in journalism from the University of Georgia.

My three sisters and I grew up understanding the importance of being able to communicate effectively and efficiently with the written word.
