Art sends rare W.H. message on race

President Barack Obama has taken a decidedly low-key approach to racial issues since he became America’s first black president two years ago. But in a hallway outside the Oval Office, he has placed a head-turning painting depicting one of the ugliest racial episodes in U.S. history.

Norman Rockwell’s “The Problem We All Live With,” installed in the White House last month, shows U.S. marshals escorting Ruby Bridges, a 6-year-old African-American girl, into a New Orleans elementary school in 1960 as court-ordered integration met with an angry and defiant response from the white community.

The thrust of the painting is not subtle. America’s vilest racial epithet appears in letters several inches high at the top of the canvas. To the left side, the letters “KKK” are plainly visible. The crowds, mostly women who gathered daily to taunt Bridges as she went to a largely empty school, are not shown in the picture. But the racist graffiti and a splattered tomato convey the hostile atmosphere.

Oh gee, the WH just happened to plant this little low-key story on race during Prince Barry's vacation.

It just happens to come out as so-called “leaders” of the “black community” have openly denigrated the tea party as racist bigots equivalent to the KKK.

Gosh, what a coincidence.

This prezidoodle does everything he can to divide this country. I am concerned he may directly or indirectly (through his ineligibility) promote a race war. And then he can declare martial law.
I just mistrust this administration.

I wonder how or if Norman Rockwell would have depicted flash mobs?

Funny, no mention that the KKK was created by the DNC, and no mention that the Senators who blocked the schools from integreation were all Democrats.

Amazing that the fact that the Republicans were the one’s who instituted integration - and giving a help-up to the Black community are now the one’s who are blamed for every ill they have.

I guess it's not there to remind him of how Democrats, both in politics and outside, have been front and center in the promotion and maintaining of racism in almost every form.

Any "moderation" is only because he's running for re-election. I hate to think what he would do in a second term.

As part of his low-key approach to racial issues, he hasn't demanded that the Washington Monument be replaced with a monument to Malcolm X, or that the Jefferson Memorial be rededicated to Sally Hemings.

I had seen that painting before, but never knew that it was about one specific case of desegregation or that the child being depicted was one specific individual.

Is O’Dumbass completely unaware that it was _Democrats_ who spewed that hatred?

Oh, the irony.

Maybe he’s subconsciously longing for the “good old days”.

I was raised in California in the 1930s, and my father was recalled to the US Navy (in the winds-of-war days of April 1941) to serve on a destroyer heading for the Atlantic; he was gone from us - via the Panama canal. So my mother packed up the family and we drove to the destroyer’s home port of Norfolk, Virginia.

That’s where I was introduced, on the ferry from Newport News to Norfolk, to racially segrated drinking fountains, (and rest rooms) for whites and blacks; and shortly later, introduced to fully segrated schools, living areas, movie balconys for blacks, back of the bus for blacks, etc.

It was one hell of a disgusting shock to me. I was eight years old.

And blasting out of every rap CD known to mankind.

The KKK were the paramilitary wing of the Democrat party, with a brief to hunt down uppity republicans and blacks.

Why a Democrat President would want to remind everyone about this disgusting period in his own party’s history is beyond me.
