APNewsBreak: Perry bills feds for housing illegals

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry has asked the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for nearly $350 million to cover the costs incurred detaining illegal immigrants in state prisons and county jails. In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Perry criticized the federal government hasn't been doing enough to secure the border with Mexico, thereby allowing illegal immigrants to enter the U.S. and use taxpayer-funded resources, including prisons and jails. It's a claim the Republican governor has made many times before.

The letter was dated Aug. 10, three days before Perry formally announced he is running for president.

"you gotta like this"

What's not to like about a song and dance man? Put him on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour but keep the RHINO out of my government.

Barick Perried.

Right on, ProCon. It’s really sad to come here and see all the vitriolic crap spewed on Perry and the other Republican candidates. What these purists need to realize is that any one of them will be a huge improvement over the Communist in Chief. Moreover, each of the Republican candidates deserves our admiration for subjecting themselves and their families to the $900 billion Dem smear machine. I have no problem with anyone pointing out policy differences or touting one fine Republican over another. However, when it gets down to thread hijacking and ad hominine attacks, they’re only feeding the Dem machine.

Funny thing is that many of the purists on FreeRepublic that repeatedly attack Perry or Romney for not lining up 100% with every conservative position agree (as I do) that Reagan was the best President in modern times (some even have his name in their taglines). Yet even he wouldn’t withstand their purity test. For example, how many times have we seen a freeper posting that they will never vote for Perry because of his “mandatory” vaccine vote or that they will never vote for Romney because of his “romneycare” vote. Well would they vote for a Republican candidate that signed the Therapeutic abortion act in 1967, allowing for abortion in California? Sure they would and did when they voted for Reagan. Would they vote for a Republican candidate that raised taxes 11 times as President and voted for the largest tax increase at the time in California history as Governor? Sure they would and did when they voted for Reagan. And of course the purists on this board would never vote for a guy that gave amnesty to over 3 million illegal aliens and tripled the budget deficit during his term as President. Well I’m glad to say that they (and I) did vote twice for a guy, Reagan, that did that and would gladly do it again because he was the best damn President we’ve had in my lifetime. No one can agree with us on everything (heck, I don’t even agree with the wife on all things political) and even the greatest make some mistakes along the way, but that shouldn’t prevent us from reflecting on the excellent qualities and policies presented by each of these Republican candidates that are actively attempting to defeat the Radical in the White House. I haven’t yet made up my mind on which candidate will get my vote in the Florida primary. However, all are light years better than a socialist community organizer.

"OK, you anti-Perry types, he isn't perfect, but you gotta like this."

He's been governor since 2000. Interesting that watching the border, sanctuary cities and billing the feds for illegals only now seem to be something he's paying attention to. Could it be that...it's his most glaring weakness in the Presidential race, and that he's a transparent RINO Perry-come-lately?

Oh, no, can't be, he must be a principled conservative. [/sarc]

Was that what you wanted?

No, obviously from this thread I posted, I'm Pro-Perry; if you want to criticize him, tell me, who's your candidate?

I have two problems with it. 1. He flip-flopped. 2. He took too long to flip-flop.

Sr El Perrista receives a blanket from Mexican Gov Enrique Martinez of Coahuila, as a token of appreciation for enacting the Texican Dream Act.

Mr. Symbolism, as you call him may very well be the last, great hope of the republican, ie. conservative party. Who's your favorite nominee?

Sorry, but you are way off base if you think Mr. Symbolism is going to save the Republican party or this country.

Look at the big money behind Perry to get a feel for what he is really about, cheap labor and globalism. Do some research on his biggest contributors, they are corporate guys.

Perry is not a limited-government, individual rights kind of guy no matter what his rhetoric is right now and neither are the big-money guys behind him.

He's just a re-packaged slightly better version of GWB who has a penchant and track record of telling conservatives what they want to hear just before an election.

Take the blinders off, you're being manipulated.

By the end of the year I will have two bumper stickers on my truck; one will be in support of whatever candidate that I eventually settle on, the other will say (in spanish) “Mexico, love it or leave it.”

Isn’t that cute! Look, the politician is trying to court our favor... Awwww...

Perry’s been governor for a while. He could have done this ANYTIME, but somehow just chose to do this now.

Too late, Perry.

Sarah, we true conservatives wait for you.
