In July alone, 21,000 guns were sold in Alabama.
To put that number in perspective, 4 years ago, Alabama gun sales hit just over 14,000.
Since 2008, gun sales have steadily climbed each year.
You may think people are purchasing guns for safety. While that's true, it's not the main reason.
The economy is causing firearm sales to soar.
The number of FBI background checks preformed this year alone is at a record high number.
Gun sales have steadily climbed each year since 2008.
There are many theories exactly why gun sales are on the rise across the country.
Some are driven by fear that gun ownership and sales will be banned.
"I think people are afraid of what might happen in the future. The government may make it more and more difficult to get weapons," said gun collector, Stan Kullman.
Some blame the struggling economy.
"The boost that we have seen in the past few years, especially since the economy has gone down, is that a lot of people are without work right now and people are getting desperate and the crime rate has gone way up. A lot of people are arming themselves for personal protection," said gun salesman, Zach Brock.
Many are finding that gun collecting is a promising financial investment.
"When times get hard, people tend to buy more guns and ammunition because it's a good investment," said the own of JC's Gun and Tackle Shop, JC Vaughn.
"Right now it pays out a lot better to put money in firearms then it does in the bank," Brock said.

For each gun stolen, I bought two to replace them.
(oh, and the intruders were not wearing Sarah Palin T-Shirts in case you were wondering)
Wasn't really wondering, why would one? And, how do you know they weren't?
Especially when they can be used to protect life and property.
I recently got a safe for that very reason. And yes gun sales have been up dramatically since Obama. And like in my family and extended family they are not all personal protection devices.
Call it a strong hunch.
Yep.... Agree.
Stay safe !
I’d call it “expect the worst, hope for the best”
And for every weapon that's purchased that someone knows about to even do these studies (federal registration/background check) there are a dozen trading hands in private sales.
Which is why the Disarmament crowd wants control [deny] those sales as well.
Couple that with watchlist checks for terrorist Tea Party people that support the second amendment and the gun grabbers have an instant method to stop those sales.
All of this Under the Radar of course.
Sorry to hear that you got robbed. Same thing happening around here at an alarming rate. Thieves are focusing on guns and jewelry and many of the break-ins are during broad daylight.
I bought 3 guns today at a yard sale for $200.00, a nice old Stevens 620A 20 ga, ugly old Sears bolt action 16 ga and a pre-64 Winchester Model 94 in 30/30 caliber. The old guy wanted to sell them all in one lot, so I took the junkers along with the ‘winnie’. Plus, bought a handful (over 3 ozt) of sterling silver jewelry for $5 bucks.
It was a good day!
Roll Tide Roll !!!
Roll Tide Roll and roll over.
How about fear of a Muzzie lovin Commie takeover?
I think he’s saying they were members of some dem “victim” group... Dems support different criminal groups.
You say you think he's saying....
I guess it's settled then.
