At least in Spain, maricon and marica are used interchangeably. But,yes, I would use "un" and I've spoken the language for 54 years! In fact it depends which word you use, it "sounds" ok to say "yo no soy marica" or "yo no soy un marica" but if you use "maricon" you have to use "un". Again, Castillian Spanish is my native language.
