A state lawmaker says a proposal mandating that anyone applying for public assistance programs in Wisconsin prove they are a legal citizen is not needed. The Republican bill would require those applying for public assistance programs to provide documentation proving they are a U.S. citizen.
Democratic State Representative JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) says the legislation is simply an attempt to use immigration and immigration reform as a political tool. Under current laws, she says undocumented immigrants cannot access public assistance programs and theres no evidence that is happening.
Zamarripa says the bill will just make it harder for those who can enroll in those programs to apply, and also makes it tougher for social workers to do their jobs. The bill requires social workers to verify documents proving citizenship, which the Milwaukee Democrats says will add another layer of bureaucracy to the process.
Zamarripa says its also unfair to fine social workers $250 if they fail to collect the right documentation, which she argues would most likely be an unintentional mistake on their part.
Zamarripa serves on the committee where the bill will likely receive a public hearing.
Yes, please, let it go to a public meeting, and we’ll see which ideology wins!
Great idea, requiring documentation for public assistance.
Employers can be fined and charged with crimes for hiring undocumented workers.
The state "hiring" them to sit on their butts should also do some checking. eVerify and drug test applicants for public assistance. Treat them like "job applicants." They are applying for a paying position.
We’re brutalizing them in the midwest these days. LOL
I love it! ‘Bout flippin’ TIME!! :)
We’re purging the voter rolls in Michigan.

We recently cut some 30,000 college students off food stamps and are imposing limits on welfare.
Leftists are such funny little hypocrites. They have zero problem requiring mountains of paper when it suit them, but prefer close to total anarchy when it comes to illegal aliens and voting. Gee, I wonder why?

Our present state and federal law may say illegal aliens are not allowed to be on the public gravy train, but it happens in large numbers. Why, because the case workers have a big work load, verifying economic numbers takes most of the intake work, so a search for legal resident status is often missed.
With the new law, the burden of showing legal resident status is on the applicant and not the case worker, so if the applicant does not show up with proper proof of legal status, he or she can be told to find the papers before coming back. If you want our money, don’t make us do all the work in handing it to you.
Excellent work! :)
“...so if the applicant does not show up with proper proof of legal status, he or she can be told to find the papers before coming back. If you want our money, dont make us do all the work in handing it to you.”
BUMP! :)
...the bill will just make it harder for those who can enroll in those programs to apply, and also makes it tougher for social workers to do their jobs.
Next, why would it make it tougher for social workers? Could the answer be that they would ACTUALLY HAVE TO DO THEIR JOB?
Oh, the gnashing of the teeth and the pulling of the hair!
They also need to check the legal documentation of the social workers themselves.
I don,t believe in too many rules and regulations and laws but since we have them lets put them to work where they are most certainly needed, in the social services.
Go Wisconsin.
