Beats me, but they did. The panthose were visible below the edges of the ball caps as well, but nothing was ever said. The army was bending over backwords for africans at that time. Lots of drugs, race riots,etc.
My husband says he had a black roommate at that time. According to Hubby, his roommate would squish his hair down and put the pantyhose over it, then put his fatigue hat on. After it had been like that for a while (I don’t know how long) he could take off his hat and pantyhose, and the hair would stay packed tight until he picked it. He had to trim the edges short, especially around the ears. When he would pick it out, it was huge, and it covered the areas that were trimmed.
Oh, and Hubby had one word to say when he watched the video. “Dependent.” But the look on his face evoked many conversations we’ve had over the years, about how some spouses are assets, and some are liabilities. They’re all called “dependence” but the tone is not at all the same. This is the kind of dependent that most soldiers choose to leave behind when they go overseas.
As for him being an English teacher, I’m guessing freelance, without a degree.
