I can almost understand where a simple law may be declared unconstitutional, but what about prop.8 in CA which was an amemdment to the state constitution. How did they rule that their OWN constitution was “unconstitutional”?

How did they rule that their OWN constitution was unconstitutional? California courts couldn't - that is why they found a gay federal judge to do it for them.
