FORT BRAGG, Calif. (AP) -- A Northern California town was reeling Monday after the death of a well-respected city councilman and former mayor who was gunned down after finding a remote illegal marijuana operation.

As authorities searched the rugged forest terrain for a suspect in the shooting, Fort Bragg Councilman Jere Melo was remembered as a community leader who led efforts to build firehouses and a first-class high school football stadium in the coastal town of about 7,000 people.

Cartels operating in the United States who hire violent illegals to guard their hidden groves and processing facilities.

It ain't just cartels. Pot has been CA's biggest cash crop for over 20 years. Most of the operations are home grown - and have been known to protect their turf violently.

Just look at the suspect's name [Aaron Bassler] - doesn't sound Hispanic to me ...

It’s tough getting laws changed. You have to find enough people to agree with you, to get the job done. You make your case. You either get them to join you, or at some point realize it’s a lost cause and accept it.

I like having a few beers in the evening. If it was illegal, I wouldn’t have my occasional beer. I wouldn’t support a black market to get that drink either.

If people were dying, being butchered in the streets, government officials being assassinated and the local cops being bought and paid for, I wouldn’t be providing any funding for the cartels, and then trying to blame it on some government policy I didn’t like.

ok, that is NOT his job... that is what the COPS are for

Actually it was his job. He was private security for the timber company that owned the land.

The latest updates to the story indicate that they didn’t find any pot growing. What they did find was opium poppies.

It's pretty much legal to grow it, own it and smoke it in California so that didn't end the violence.

Actually that is not true. If you can afford a medical MJ card and if you can get a Dr. to approve you for one, then you can grow it and own it, but still there are limited amounts a person has to adhere to. It is not the same as legalizing it. Plus, until they legalize it across the country one state or so will make no difference.

Stupid, lazy and chicken American illegal drug users who are too stupid, lazy and chicken to change their reality so they use illegal drugs to hide from reality for a few minutes and thereby fund some of the most barbaric criminals this world has ever seen.

if going into a suspected felony crime scene without law enforcement knowledge or assistance is their SOP, then his surviving wife and kids will prolly OWN said timber company when their lawyers get done with them...

and i'm pretty sure the law would take a very dim view of it also because of this exact thing.

“If I were President...I’d require the agents to carry only weapons with rubber riot bullets.”

If YOU were President, I think YOU should have to lead all of these raids armed with only rubber bullets.

“If you don’t like the laws of our land, get them changed.”

When the citizens of states have voted to do so, they’ve been overruled by the Federal govt. or their own state legistlators.

“6. Now that everyone is a “criminal” you can selectively remove and imprison your political enemies.”

If this doesn’t work to your liking, arrest people for violating obscure environmental laws of other countries (like Gibson Guitar Co.)—be creative.

Another report says that they were investigating a report of a transient (presumably the killer) living out there and went to investigate and probably run him off. When they got close, he popped up with a gun and started shooting. Police later found an opium poppy patch, but no marijuana.

I believe it is fair to say that the federal government does not have the best support for doing what it has been doing. On the other hand, it does seem that universal laws on this matter would be best.

A person moving across five to seven states while traveling, shouldn’t be able to be blind-sided by laws that are more stringent than those of their home state, especially if the penalties are severe.

I’m not a advocate of legalization. I believe we will always have a black market for drugs, unless we decide every person alive should be able to take whatever drug they want regardless of age.

While I would personally see it as a decaying of society if it were to happen, it is still necessary for you folks to elect your favorite people to the offices that can effect change in Washington on these matters.

If you do so, I applaud your tenacity. I would not like to see the aftermath. The sole focus of illegal drugs would suddenly be 100% focused on children.
