Wausau Mayor Jim Tipple:
"The banning of a political party from participation at any event co-sponsored by the City is against public policy and not in the best interest of all the citizens of the City of Wausau. And therefore, we encourage the event organizer to invite all interested parties, or reimburse the city for other costs."

Or, they could have a parallel parade, for those state employees who no longer have their dues checked off..
I can’t argue with that!
Regardless of party, the mayor does not want to risk the city being in a lawsuit.
WE are the slaves.
Tax their excess benefits over and above the average private sector benefits. They want higher taxes then this is it!
Score one for the good guys.
Interesting. I agree that this is important.
I was stunned when I read that the unions were demanding this.
Thank, Jellybean! A little better today than the last week, for sure! :)
I too hope they continue to refuse. It has become an EXCELLENT “teachable moment” as people start to realize that labor day isn’t really about ALL workers — only those who support the unions...
EXACTLY... Someone on the local tea party page at FB stated that lawyers were working on this - I didn’t understand why at the time as I was working from the assumption that the city wasn’t paying for anything... It’s definitely the threat of a lawsuit, and very bad publicity for the city that prompted Tipple to take such a strong stand on this. I think this is the most backbone I have seen him display on ANYTHING! LOL
I know, right? I was amazed that the Unions were actually showing their true colors right out there in the open for everyone to see. I’m guessing heads are gonna roll at the Marathon Co. Labor Union Council — can’t have someone in charge that would betray their image like that! I hope people realize that it’s not just one or two people, but that this spectacle really does represent the attitude of the vast majority of those in unions - or at least those RUNNING the unions!
On the actual issue, I'm a little torn. I'm trying to ignore the fact that it's Republicans that are to be excluded. I suppose anyone who organizes a parade should have some control over the content, no? Suppose it was a Christmas parade and the atheists wanted in? Or a NAACP march and the Klan wanted a spot? Westboro Baptists marching in a VFW-sponsored Memorial Day parade? By tradition of course, federal public holidays include everyone, but then I suppose Christmas is a federal public holiday too. The mayor says it's against ‘public policy,’ and I would suppose that it is, but I don't know if it violates any specific rules. Public streets are usually the quintessential public forum, where viewpoint discrimination would violate the First Amendment, but actually it's possible to make the argument that it may be a limited public forum because it is a permitted event for a non-standard use, (i.e., something other than driving), and that forcing the union organizers to accept Republicans would violate their freedom of assembly. Interesting scenario. It would be different if the city itself was organizing the event, and it was excluding participants based on viewpoint, but if you allow private parties to organize via permit, then I suppose it's up to the duly permitted party to include whom they wish. I'm sure there's something on point. Here's an idea: why don't the Repubs just hold their own parade immediately following, or a concert? By the way they're certainly free to protest along the route or hang whatever signs they like in the Republican-owned businesses along the route. Interesting.
I can understand this. “Labor” Day is the commie hollyday. Republicans should have to work. After all, Indipindince day is the big Republican summer hollyday.
“I can understand this. Labor Day is the commie hollyday. Republicans should have to work. After all, Indipindince day is the big Republican summer hollyday.”
It is iconic isn’t it. Republicans beleive in self-determination, Independence (of the individual and their State). Democrats beleive in hard slavish labor at the behest of the majority.(private or public “Union” )
Agreed. For that matter, there should not be a Labor Day holiday. It was just a way to give union workers another day off work.
Life is SOOO painful for liberals! Let them eat GARBAGE!
“This is certainly a sad commentary on the degree of polarizaton in our socierty. At least we can see the true nature of the left on display.”
I agree that it’s a sad state of affairs, but polarization to this and even further degrees is the logical outcome to the situation America faces. On one side there’s us, Right wing traditional value America (and all that implies) and on the other, Neo Soviet Leftists (and all THAT implies).
We CANNOT come together. Our worldview/belief structure/et all is the polar opposite of each other. Thus polarization leading to eventual conflict is not only the logical outcome, but it is inevitable.
Parades aren’t my cup of tea either, but I think I’d make it a point to show up to this one, now that the unions have made such a big stink over it.
Who has created more jobs, unions/Democrats or Republicans?
Who has killed more jobs, unions/Democrats or Republicans?
They’ve got a lot of nerve trying to make it look like they are the ones who care about labor.
They care about union dues and manipulated votes, and that’s the full extent of it.
In the shadow of Rib Mountain the union thugs scream and no one reacts....This beautiful state is where the scourge is met head-on by those who love Liberty and who HATE being ripped off! Thugs, it is over.
Actually, I disagree..All four are. Labor from all of the hard working Americans who aren’t beholden to the AFL-CIO and the Teamsters (et al)...the non-violent message of Dr. King - equality among the races, Ronald Wilson Reagan who saved this nation from itself and blazed the trail back to Liberty and Thomas Jefferson who conceived it all....
