Inside the spy unit that NYPD says doesn't exist

NEW YORK -Working with the CIA, the New York Police Department maintained a list of "ancestries of interest" and dispatched undercover officers to monitor Muslim businesses and social groups, according to new documents that offer a rare glimpse inside an intelligence program the NYPD insists doesn't exist.

The documents add new details to an Associated Press investigation that explained how undercover NYPD officers singled out Muslim communities for surveillance and infiltration.

The Demographics Unit, a squad of 16 officers fluent in a total of at least five languages, was told to map ethnic communities in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and identify where people socialize, shop and pray.

Once that analysis was complete, according to documents obtained by the AP, the NYPD would "deploy officers in civilian clothes throughout the ethnic communities."

The architect of this and other programs was a veteran CIA officer who oversaw the program while working with the NYPD on the CIA payroll. It was an unusual arrangement for the CIA, which is prohibited from spying inside the U.S.

After the AP report, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the NYPD has kept the city safe and does not take religion into account in its policing. The NYPD denied the Demographics Unit exists.

So the NYPD spies on muslims. What’s the problem? Just shows that they are 100 times smarter than the asshats in the so called “Homeland Security”.

Hmmmm...let's see...3000 people murdered by Muslims in NYC...riots in London by Muslims...riots in Paris by Muslims...bombings, stonings, and beheading by Muslims all over the world...

Nope, I don't have a problem with NYPD.

Somebody on the CIA payroll helped them, so it’s “domestic spying” by the CIA. We are safer, but at what price?!/sarcastic hysteria.

Probably be cheaper and more effective just to deport all the NYC Muslims.

Can you imagine a really serious effort, though, to round up and clean out all the illegals living in NYC. What percentage of that town is in the country legally?

Less than you would think, probably.

The Fiscal Policy Institute's numbers give about 6.5% of the city's population (that's still over 500,000 people).

Also, there may be more Afro-Caribbean and Chinese illegals than illegals from Latin America.

The recession has likely driven the number downward as well.

Sorry, reversed your question. More people in NYC are in the country legally that you probably think. Almost 94%.

The question becomes who else do they spy on.

“The question becomes who else do they spy on. “

NO, the question becomes: Why is the AOLNEWS/AP even reporting this? If you, as an American, were to move to any other country in the world which then declared war against America, do you really think you’d be allowed freedom to meet secretly with other Americans?

Utterly irrelevant. The point is this IS the USA, NOT North Korea or Cuba or Iran. Try reading the first and fourth amendments of the US constitution.

If you think that the government spying on the citizens is a good idea, then I suggest you move to a place more in keeping with your expectations rather than lower the expectations for the rest of us.

which then declared war against America

What country currently is at war with the US?

Hammer them when they spy on us, but let them spy on the frigging muslims. In my opinion you are either a muslim or an american. Can’t be both. Too many conflicting loyalties.

Slippery slope to tyranny. The former DDR spied on its citizens, and no one ever considered it a good place to live.

In my opinion you are either a muslim or an american.

Maybe true, but still shouldn't start making exceptions to the basic rights of Americans. Like I said first muslims, then NRA members, then etc. Governments LOVE things like this it gives them the camel's nose in the tent.

“What country currently is at war with the US?”

You know very well that I never said that. I’ll answer your question with a question.

What religion killed 3,000 people on U.S. soil on 9/11?

You have a short memory. Read what you wrote

other country in the world which then declared war against America, do you really think you’d be allowed freedom to meet secretly with other Americans?

You're advocating internal spying based on a declaration of war. I ask again, what country is currently at war with the USA?

... allowed freedom to meet secretly with other Americans

Read the Bill of Rights. I'm pretty sure it doesn't restrict freedom of assembly to specific religions, but if you can show me that it does I'll concede your point.

THe problem is that some liberal piece of human debris published it and made it public.

There are reasons things are kept secret.

What do you suggest? Let the muslims do what they will and arrest them after they have murdered thousands more? I see your point, and it is a tricky path we tread, but doing nothing is not an option.

The article does NOT say that anyone should not have freedom of religion. And the Bill of Rights does NOT give anyone the right to come here and murder our citizens.

“You have a short memory. Read what you wrote”

You have a reading comprehension problem.

What do you suggest?

What the NYPD is doing is unconstitutional. I guess I'd go with the old saying better ten guilty go free than 1 innocent be punished. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but look at it this way. Muslims killed 3000 people in a country of 300,000,000 or 1/1000th of a percent. 6500 people die in the usa every day for one reason or another One day was 50% higher because of militant islamists. However, intrusive government under Pol Pot in Cambodia killed about 10% of the population. Stalin's policies killed an estimated 20,000,000 - 25,000,000. Hitler killed millions and not just Jews. Every one of these governments had no regard for the rights of their citizens.

Because it's better documented, look at the Nazis. They started ignoring the human rights of an unpopular religion and expanded to homosexuals, communists, and generally anyone who was known to disagree with Hitler's policies. Likewise the Soviet Union - anyone who was even suspected of thinking the wrong way was either killed outright or shipped off to Siberia to starve or freeze. I am FAR more concerned over the organized destruction of my rights by a government "not letting a good crisis go to waste," than by my possible risk of terrorist activities from a few hate filled fanatics. Government can't keep you safe (how many terrorists were stopped by the TSA? None - the airline passengers stomped Richard Reid and a couple of other headcases). But government can take away your rights and kill you.

Who do New Yorkers hate and fear the most? Gun owners. I can just see that dimunitive turd Bloomberg (with his taxpayer funded armed bodyguards to keep his worthless hide safe) getting up another task force to spy on American Rifleman subscribers, etc.

Let the muslims do what they will and arrest them after they have murdered thousands more?

The risk of this is the price we all have to pay for freedom.

No, the article didn't say it, you said it when you advocated keeping specific religions from meeting in secret.

I see you're intellectually dishonest. (ie arguing against things I never said and ignoring what you actually said - it isn't like the record of what we said is hidden) Get back to me when you've learned how to reason rather than fabricate. Or not, I've come to the conclusion that you're not worth wasting my time on.
