Were there blacks living in what is now known as South Africa when the whites arrived.

No. The native South Africans were the San People, aka Bushmen/Hottentots. Many of them were killed off by blacks migrating from the north and whites settling the south and moving further inland. The San are more brown and I think shorter in statue.

The whites were in what is now SA before the blacks, but not before the San.
