There are Mexican and other Latin American Gypsies. As is normally the case Gypsies adopt some of the overt cultural norms of whatever country they live in. They are called GUITANOS. Remember the Macarena? It got started at an event where someone had invited in a local Flamenco instructor. Flamenco is pretty much a traditional Gypsy way of dancing that's been merged with traditional Andalucian dancing (with all the symbolism of the Roma intact BTW). One of the singers in the music group Los Del Rio spontaneously came up with half the lyrics on the spot. It's dollars to doughnuts all three principals in this event were Guitano.

I am not surprised a guy named Gore (a typical name among the traditional border bandits in Scotland) adopted the song as his campaign theme.

The Gypsies usually become Catholics in Catholic countries, and Orthodox in Orthodox countries. In America they can do whatever they want ~ several years back ~ much to my surprise and distress ~ they were proselytizing on behalf of the Church of the First Born!

Apparently that group had infiltrated the carnival racket and picked up Traveler and Gypsy members. Actually, COTFB marriage customs make more sense than traditional Traveler/Gypsy customs ~ this is a big place, men have to travel farther to get work, and it's much harder to get together with other Travelers/Gypsies to make marriage arrangements.

Don’t they also betroth their youngsters at an early age in creepy ceremonies? I seem to remember a 60 Minutes story about these people. Con men and thieves with a strange social system.

From Wikipedia:

** The United States

Some estimations number Irish Travellers in the United States at 10,000 while others put the number at 40,000. They are descendants of Travellers who left Ireland, mostly during the Great Irish Famine of 1845-60. The largest and most affluent population of about 2,500 lives in Murphy Village, outside of the town of North Augusta, South Carolina.[14] Other communities exist near White Settlement, Texas, where the families stay in their homes during the winter, and leave during the summer., while smaller enclaves can be found across Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.[15] **

That explains how my son knows about them. He lives not far from there. He claims that outsiders are discouraged from even driving through that town.

What discourages folks the most is all the street signs have been removed. You have to live there to know where to go.
