Gallup: Unemployment Went Up—Again—in August (Gallup Survey predicts 9.1+ or Discouraged UP)

(CNSNews.com) - The U.S. unemployment rate increased in August, according to the Gallup polling company, which surveys approximately 30,000 people each month about their employment status.

By Gallup’s calculation, unemployment was 8.8 percent at the end of July and rose to 9.1 percent by the end of August. At the end of June, it was 8.7 percent.

Gallup’s unemployment rate differs slightly from the federal government's. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (the federal agency that calculates the government’s official unemployment rate), the unemployment rate was 9.1 percent in July. The BLS is scheduled to report its calculation of the national unemployment for August tomorrow.

Gallup is predicting that tomorrow's BLS report will also show that unemployment went up in August—unless so many unemployed people became discouraged during the month and stopped seeking jobs so that they are no longer calculated as part of the national workforce by the federal government, or unless the government makes an "unusual" seasonal adjustment to the unemployment numbers

And of course, this was “unexpected”...by those economic geniuses who are sooooo much smarter than the uneducated Tea Partiers.

unless the government makes an "unusual" seasonal adjustment

Oh, they would never do that.

It seems like there are two numbers this administration is working very hard to avoid. Unemployment at 10% or above and the Dow at below 10,000. Manipulation seems rampant.

Gallup points out all the schemes the government could use to make the numbers go down: discourage, unusual adjustment, parsing the definition of “looking for work”, etc.

Is Gallup suggesting that the government stats are lies?

I bet the unemployment rate will drop tomorrow to 9.0%. Not because many jobs are added, but because more people have dropped out of the labor force.

My predictions for Friday’s numbers:

Unemployment rate: 9.0%
Jobs: 80,000 added

These numbers will obviously basically suck, but the media and Hussein will call these figures signs of great progress.

According to your chart unemployment began to rise with the presidential campaign of 2008.

Marxist futures don’t seem to inspire capitalist investment, do they?

The media focuses only on U3, when U3 should be discounted entirely if U4 also goes up (discouraged workers.)

The truth is that U6 is the closest thing to the real picture of unemployment in the nation, but since that is around 18%, you’ll never see it get broadcast with a democratic president and a liberal media.

Nearly 1 in 5 is struggling hard to feed their families in America today. I can’t believe they aren’t blaming Obama, but that that, too, is being hidden.

“but the media and Hussein will call these figures signs of great progress.”

Something deep has begun to panic the left, and Obama’s willing sycophants in the media, that’s for sure. I think the BLS numbers could be far worse than what anyone thinks, especially the “Total Employed” number.

One thing I know we can be sure of, the results of the adjustments will be "unexpected".

Well, we will know tomorrow at around 8:30 AM EST. I am still betting on the rate going down to 9.0% (because people have dropped out of the labor force) and the jobs added at 80,000. The media and Obama will herald these piss poor numbers as "green shoots" and signs the economy is gaining traction.

I love the new Goobermint math, a year ago we were at 9.7 and the unemployment has gone up bout every month and now we are at 9.1 unemployment.

Time for most in Congress to join them.

I’ll second that any day.

Business fears Obama. The stats tell us that more than anything else.

And a lot of those numbnutz are the very ones who put the guy in office. What were they thinking?

They need to out these idiots who ‘expect’ unemployment to drop and fire each and every one of them. After watching them get it wrong every week for the last 130 weeks, I am beginning to see a pattern emerge.
