I love the new Goobermint math, a year ago we were at 9.7 and the unemployment has gone up bout every month and now we are at 9.1 unemployment.

My thought exactly. No doubt they're cooking the books over at the Department of Labor.

unless so many unemployed people became discouraged during the month and stopped seeking jobs so that they are no longer calculated as part of the national workforce by the federal government

I've always wondered about how this part is determined - do people somehow "report" that they've given up? If one doesn't have a job, can't find a job they don't necessarily give up completely, do they? They surely would be open to a job, one would think. Besides, what alternative is there?

No worries. Our Supreme Leader will fix everything in a matter of days as soon as his influencial "Job Plan" is presented. You just wait and see. All will be perfect with the world right after that big "Job Plan" speech. You'll see. Uh-huh. Yep.

Waddya bet when we get a republican president the unemployment numbers will majically jump from 9% to over 15%.

Just a wild guess.

I’ve heard that the best measure of unemployment is not U3, U4, U5, OR U6 but that it is instead the number of people who actually have jobs divided by the US working age population. The employment-population ration in the US is just under 60% at about 58%, I believe.

That means we’re a little ahead of 3rd world countries, but also as you can see, we’re again trusting government numbers.

I think the best idea is an independent, fair statistical survey of employed, partially employed, unemployed, and the uninterested in employment.

"The media focuses only on U3, when U3 should be discounted entirely if U4 also goes up (discouraged workers.).

Oh, the media will use U4 - if the unemployment rate goes up and U4 goes down "It's a hopeful sign that more workers have reentered the workforce!"

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics." (Mark Twain wrote it, but attributed it to Benjamin Disraeli. Scholars contest the attribution.)

they are blaming Obama. Why do you think his approval is at 30% among white people? That’s basically liberals and hard core dems who will back him no matter what. Same as how W always had his hard core conservatives and Republicans.

Even among blacks he’s down to 80% and among hispanics close to 40%. For him those #s are awful.

His approval among whites is actually the same or lower than Bush’s was when he was at 30% overall, the difference is that Obama has the huge #s among blacks to push his overall # up that W for obvious reasons never had. The media will never tell you that, though, that his approval among whites is as low as any President in history.

And I agree with the u3/u6 but to be fair, when W was in office, you saw Republicans focusing on the u3 in the same way.

his approval is at 30% among white people

That number of 30% looks on the high side, even with the hard core liberals and dems. I used to be able to find people who would say they voted for zer0, not happening anymore. Found one white person that likes zer0 in the last year. The blacks are split, and some have voiced their disgust regarding zer0. Possibly a great sign. May this hold through the election cycle. Please note, I am not a scientific survey, but 30% number looks on the high side in my neck of the woods.

The Census Bureau on behalf of the Labor Dept calls about 65,000 households a month. They ask everyone in the household if they have a job. If they don't have a job, they ask if they have looked for work in the past 4 weeks. If they have not, then they are discouraged job seekers and are taken out of the labor market. I'm not exactly certain what constitutes "looking for work", but certainly sending resumes, etc. should qualify as looking for work. This is the survey that actually calculates the unemployment percent.

There is another survey called the business survey and this one determines the number of jobs added or lost during the month.

So it is possible that the household survey can suggest that jobs were added in the past month because it captures people starting businesses from home, etc, while the business survey indicates many less jobs added since this survey does not capture any new businesses started. The surveys quite often conflict with each other, but over a longer period of time, they come together.

The household survey quite often captures a recovery faster than the business survey. The business survey will catch up over time

No matter how they adjust the numbers, the people in this country who are out of luck and resources KNOW they are out of luck and resources. Press fiddling with the numbers isn’t going to wipe out Obamavilles and the homeless living in the streets, people who previosuly led happy, prosperous lives and enjoyed the fruits of a stable job. It’s degrading and a dangerous way for the Obama Administration to continue or ignore.

Thanks. WOW, what an odd way of coming up with the unemployed percentage, but I suppose if it’s done the same each month a trend can be established.
