Obama and the Burden of Exceptionalism
Wall Street Journal ^ | Shelby Steele

Posted on 09/01/2011 9:13:56 AM PDT by ventanax5

If I've heard it once, I've heard it a hundred times: President Obama is destroying the country. Some say this destructiveness is intended; most say it is inadvertent, an outgrowth of inexperience, ideological wrong-headedness and an oddly undefined character. Indeed, on the matter of Mr. Obama's character, today's left now sounds like the right of three years ago. They have begun to see through the man and are surprised at how little is there.

Yet there is something more than inexperience or lack of character that defines this presidency: Mr. Obama came of age in a bubble of post-'60s liberalism that conditioned him to be an adversary of American exceptionalism. In this liberalism America's exceptional status in the world follows from a bargain with the devil—an indulgence in militarism, racism, sexism, corporate greed, and environmental disregard as the means to a broad economic, military, and even cultural supremacy in the world. And therefore America's greatness is as much the fruit of evil as of a devotion to freedom.

“So we Americans cannot help but feel some ambivalence toward our singularity in the world...”

I love the article, but, I don't think this statement is accurate.

Americans do not feel ambivalence about our singularity.
It is not now and it never was lorded over weak and oppressed people.

On the contrary, America is the first to offer assistance to people who are deprived, oppressed or threatened. I don't think the historic record is so far defaced that two world wars have been written out of the script.

This whole idea of guilt for exceptionalism is BS. I am certain there are millions and millions more people thankful for American exceptionalism than there are people who find it objectionable.

Ummmm, NO.

He`s just a street agitator with a sheepskin who is a neo-marxist.

He hates unalienable rights, negative liberties. He adheres to the Soviet model of positive rights and the new soviet man.

Exactly.

For all the bad press put out by the media, there were many in Iraq and Afghanistan who said “Thank God for the USA”.

It is absolutely true that there are many people in many countries who hate and envy us.

But if you put those countries in a situation where someone has to save them for some reason, the eyes all look to the West, and by the West, I don’t mean Spain or France.

The light has always been on, the problem is, the number of fools who had their eyes and ears shut. Maybe they are finally starting to open their eyes and ears.

There are none so blind as they who will not see.

Like me, he is black, and it was the government that in part saved us from the ignorances of the people. So the concept of the exceptionalism—the genius for freedom—of the American people may still be a stretch for him. But in fact he was elected to make that stretch. It should be held against him that he has failed to do so.

Mr. Steele is both a genius with the written word as well as a true American patriot.

“Americans do not feel ambivalence about our singularity.”

SS is right - unfortunately, there ARE many Americans (no legal immigrants, interestingly enough) born here who share BHO’s warped views - millions of them. Radical children of the 60’s, Latte/Limousine Liberals, Leftists in the Arts, all with white guilt; minorities who want to take down the Man, Progressive politicians, activists and voters, Marxists, Communists, NWO Globalists - the list goes on (and some of these overlap).

We are faced with serious threats, all led by a treasonous POTUS and his like-minded circle of power. The only reason many of the above groups are displeased with BHO is his feeble public show of “moderation”. They’re under the mistaken impression that he’s gone a little “soft” on his radicalism. They needn’t worry.

And they will still vote for him next year in droves.

We have a tough job cut out for us, and we’ll need all the solidarity we can muster next November if we’re to get a shot at ridding our beloved country of this disease in the WH.

You ARE speaking of BHO, right? Because Shelby Steele’s a respected, articulate conservative.
