I remember talking to a guy who was supposed to try to rehabilitate criminals. He said that there is no cure for pedophiles. He said they tried everything except exorcism, and nothing could get that drive/desire out of those people. That totally shook my world because I would like to believe that every person has a chance to become healthy and whole.

The longer I’ve lived, the more I realize how powerful the brain is. What goes into the brain and what comes out of the brain are both so critical. Whether social, psychological, chemical.... whatever.

What you described about incarcerated people who admit that they would go back to the same behavior when released reminds me of my former sister-in-law (a different one than I mentioned before). She was repeatedly sexually abused by her uncle and cousins as a kid and her adoptive mother physically abused her as well. When I knew her she was also bi-polar. Every time her mom would beat her she would go out and get laid. That was the one thing she could do “right” - one thing she could be a joy and satisfaction to somebody else on. She got pregnant while in college and when her pastor found out about it he refused to let her have communion until she would promise not to fornicate again. She said that she couldn’t say that, and his manner didn’t allow her to be comfortable enough to tell him that she ran to the guys because she was hurting inside so badly. She knew it was unreasonable for her to expect the gaping hole inside her heart and soul to stop crying to be filled, just like that, on demand. Some people reach for chocolate when they’re down; she knew she was using guys as a crutch but didn’t know how to live any other way. Her story also made me think that there was something spiritual going on in all that - that the thrill was a substitute for what she really hungered for. I really, really hurt for her.

I have a co-worker who is in a similar situation, and I also hurt for him. Both of them are really nice people, just trying to deal with the hand they’ve been dealt.

I also wonder what the impact of readily-available porn will be. Particularly on marriages and families. There are already so many influences that seem to minimize the need for a stable, lifelong relationship, but our nature is hungry for that, I believe.

...does the military do anything to prepare the soldier for the reality of actually having to kill an enemy...

I won't rule out that there could have been some psyops material inserted into basic training, but for the most part I would say no. In my experience, the modern P.C. military spent much more time training us NOT to kill the enemy.

I guess you probably don't have a full grasp on the power of self-preservation. When the enemy shoots at you, it becomes extremely easy to shoot back.

one of the objections to porn is that it can lead to a guy viewing women as mere objects

Here I think you may also not have much insight on the mind of man, which is in fact quite simple although not singular. A man can love a woman wholely and as a person. At the same time, with the exception of a short period of time immediately after completing the act itself, most men spend most of their time with a varyingly high degree of desire to do one thing. Each man acts upon that desire in his own way, some become insane rapists, others monks, most men just get it when they can and try not to act like monsters the rest of the time.

You might be interested in the Meese Report on pornography for the Reagan administration.. A lot of research went into it.

Not very good research by what I have read over the years.

The Meese Report was criticised as a poor report even by antiporn groups.

If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.

Golf? lol

Somebody said that the key to a happy husband is to keep his tummy full and his balls empty. My husband and I had a good laugh over that but he basically admitted it’s mostly true. So I hear what you’re saying, and I do realize it must be tough to be a guy, especially in a culture where skin is everywhere. Having a wife who is always ready, willing, and able has to be a good thing. That’s not the case for guys on deployment and I’m sure it’s tough.

I do realize the power of self-preservation. It’s not being able to do the killing in the heat of battle that would be tough; just the living with it afterwards might be tough for some people. Especially when they have to make the decision in a split second but have the rest of their life to second-guess that decision. When you’ve got political players like John Murtha doing crap like they did to the Haditha Marines it only makes it harder, I would think.

For quite a while I struggled over the question of whether I could shoot to kill somebody who was threatening my kids. I’ve come to the place where I could do it and never look back, I think, but if the situation had arisen before I had sorted that out I’d have had a tough time.

Ain’t that the truth. As it is, we are fallen people governed by fallen people. No wonder we have so much trouble.

The one thing none of these porn threads seems to ever touch on you come closest to. God, in His Infinite Wisdom, gave man a testosterone level quite literally one hundred fold greater than women. Some couples seems to be able to communicate their needs and desires and be happy. Most, it seems, cannot. All the folks who decry the stuf seem to miss the point and the opportunity. They don’t realize, IMHO, that Satan has them “barking up the wrong tree”.

Drink water from your own cistern,
running water from your own well.
Should your springs overflow in the streets,
your streams of water in the public squares?
Let them be yours alone,
never to be shared with strangers.
May your fountain be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
A loving doe, a graceful deer -
may her breasts satisfy you always,
may you ever be captivated by her love.
Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress?
Why embrace the bosom of another man’s wife?

Proverbs 5:15-20
