The evolution of flash mobs from pranks to crime and revolution
San Francisco Examiner ^ | August 28, 2011 | David Downs

They had instructions to carry masks, wear black and converge en masse to foment chaos at specific times and places. They were divided into green, yellow and red risk categories. They were compartmentalized into cells to avoid compromising the secret master plan.

They weren’t terrorists, but a so-called flash mob that BART spokesman Linton Johnson said was hell-bent on disrupting train service on Aug. 11.

Such flash mobs — seemingly spontaneous gatherings of people organized by mobile phones and social networks — can range from cute forums for creative expression to a powerful tool in the anarchist playbook. From the protests of BART and the so-called Arab Spring to recent U.S. flash mob robberies and the organized looting in London, 2011 is shaping up as the year of the flash mob.

Very informative article. Thank you for posting.

This is exactly why Qaddafi and Assad shut down all cellphone service in their countries as the rebellions grew worse. The rebels were using the same “flashmob” strategy to organize. But what are we supposed to do? It’s not like we can shut down all cellphone service in Philly or Atlanta.

One day a flash mob will meet a flash suppressor. It will be ugly.

I hate that the words “flash mobs” has two opposite uses.

Meaning 1) Group of people who organize an unexpected and well choreographed performance in a public place, often including song or dance and usually performed by a Church, School, or Youth Group. The theme always sends a positive message, and spectators are always touched in some way.

Meaning 2) Out of control thugs out to cause as much mayhem as they can get away with.

Make that “...determined, ARMED, and angry patriots...” and you’ll be dead-on.

"The notion that we can deal with this sort of thing by shutting down people’s ability to communicate with one another is unrealistic."

Really? I bet it worked just fine.

Flash mobs better be very very careful in America. I can just picture radical muslim Al Qaeda terrorists using this tool against unsuspecting Americans. Set up a large flash mob of 1,000 people for whatever....sing, dance, etc...and set off a few bombs in the middle of them....and then they will be laughing at how easy it is to kill stupid Americans.

Flash mob, a collection of punks. I swear, these “flash mobs” are just tailor made for a hand grenade. The grenade was invented just for this kind of thing. Indiscriminate and very persuasive in discouraging large groups being where they ought not be.

#2 is terrorism, plain and simple. The MSM will not label it that b/c it is almost exclusively blacks.

wow. “wear black, carry masks, divided into cells, risk
assessment” no doubt here, this is “getting in their
faces” thanks.
P.S. this was August 11. didn’t hear about this one for a
month.

I hate the dedicated, disinformationist conflation of the
two kinds of gatherings also. I also think that the violent
mobs did not need the example of the latter to arise.
The journalistic misuse of “flash mob” also serves the
purpose of conditioning us to surrender our First Amendment
rights to peaceably assemble.
P.S. there might be something of a parallel with the
now seemingly entrenched pejorative use of “hacker” in
the computer/IT field.
