I don't hold any great brief FOR the current-day NAACP (which really is, as Rush says, the NAALCP (L being for Liberal), however, this sounds like UNC is being totalitarian.

Doesn't a private club have a right to exclude someone--especially if he espouses views totally contrary to what the club stands for? How can you possibly have a campus club/group with any independence if the university gets to determine its membership policies?

I'd fight for the right of NAACP to exclude anyone for any reason it wants...

Depends on whether the "private club" accepts "public" money or not.

In this case it appears that the NAACP received funds from student activity fees (aka "public" money). Those fees come with strings attached and the controlling body (the student government) has every right to determine membership policies of participating organizations.
