A Bad Call on Ozone

President Obama’s decision not to proceed with stronger air-quality standards governing ozone is a setback for public health and the environment and a victory for industry and its Republican friends in Congress. ...

the president said he did not want to burden industry with new rules at a time of great economic uncertainty, and he pledged to revisit the issue in two years. But since the proposed rules would not have begun to bite for several years, his decision seemed driven more than anything else by politics and his own re-election campaign.

Ozone is the main component of smog, a leading cause of respiratory and other diseases. The standards governing allowable ozone levels of ozone in communities across the country have not changed since 1997. In 2008, the Bush administration proposed a new standard that was a good deal weaker than the recommendations of the E.P.A.’s science advisers and were promptly challenged in courts by state governments and environmental groups.

This summer, Lisa Jackson, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, sent a new and stronger standard to the White House — igniting a fierce lobbying campaign by industry groups ...

They always forget to include the people who would have lost their jobs had the rules gone through, as well as the impact on consumer prices.

Here's where I agree with the NY Times. It was a good call. We didn't need these regulations. The new regulations would have done away with tens of thousands of jobs. Also, we would have had rolling blackouts during peak demand because we wouldn't have as much power generating capacity as we have demand. It would have been a disaster.

Where I disagree is the Pres__ent didn't go far enough. He delayed the new regs. He did not reject them outright. It is likely that these regs will come back after the 2012 election, whether Obama wins or loses. More likely, actually, if he is beaten at the polls.

Ozone is the main component of smog, a leading cause of respiratory and other diseases.

Liberalism is the main component of stupidity, a leading cause of recession and other economic woes.

One of the groups that requested this was, IIRC, one of the major unions, which was afraid that the measure would result in a loss of jobs for its members. Hardly Republicans.

All Bambi has done is suspend enforcement, in any case; the EPA has not revoked this regulation, and he has not dropped his policy of imposing radical policies through regulatory means.

Wait...He just said to hold off until 2013. Just like the ceiling deal...He just wants to get by 2012.

Same thing with Obamacare...He thought he could get away with it but this huge "social experiment" with no consensus has bogged everything down...

Let's face it...he's a communist!!

"...the proposed rules would not have begun to bite for several years..."

That sentence shows the complete disconnect the Times has from reality....they don't undestand that businesses plan NOW beacuse of what they expect will happen, or not, in a few years..that's the "climate of uncertainty" that is killing the economy..

President Obama’s decision not to proceed with stronger air-quality standards governing ozone is less a setback for public health and the environment and a clear victory for COMMON SENSE and responsible environmentalism.

Public health would be better served if we stopped passing laws encouraging public exposure to STDs and AIDS and mental health problems by fostering same sex marriage.

Dear NYT,
Where does ozone come from, or how is it made?

Ozone is made when radiation comes through the atmosphere, it strikes water, and the ionization creates ozone.

So.....at the intervals when there are “holes” in the ozone layer, allowing more radiation to pass through the atmosphere, it strikes water and creates more ozone.

It is a self-healing process that’s been going on in 3 to 5 week cycles since time began.
Man’s use of fluorocarbons is a non-factor in the open system we live in.
The ozone/fluorocarbon myth was created in a closed lab and extrapolated to promote an agenda.
Not science.

One of the basic tenants of the Liberal mindset is that things should be rationed. There should be shortages of things people need everyday and the supply should be managed by a few extra smart people in government.

As I write this, millions of women and minorities are dying from air pollution!

But Obama and his CAPITALIST PIG FAT CAT CORPORATION-LOVING friends are removing these absolutely necessary safety standards that will not only protect the lungs of women and minorities but SAVE THE EARTH!

Ommmmmm...!

You are talking about stratospheric ozone. That is the ozone layer that is up around 30,000 feet above the Earth’s surface.

The regulations in question address tropospheric ozone, which is ozone formed much more near the surface of the Earth (0 to 2000 feet or so). It is formed by a much different photochemical process than the one you describe.
