Notices begin process of eliminating California government jobs
Sacramento Bee ^ | 9/4/11 | Jon Ortiz

Posted on 09/04/2011 9:21:16 AM PDT by SmithL

The state has warned nearly 3,300 California state workers this year that their positions may disappear as the government grinds through a slow-motion layoff process that aims to shrink government over the next few years.

The notices, overwhelmingly concentrated in the Sacramento area so far, represent the initial wave of warnings that eventually will lead to several thousand state jobs lost.

Of the State Restriction of Appointment notices issued, 2,024 went to employees working in Sacramento County. Los Angeles County accounted for the next-highest number of potential layoffs with 800 notices going to workers there.

More are coming. Many departments haven't finished their civil service layoff plans. Departments staffed exclusively with appointed employees will simply vanish, since those workers have no civil service protections.

"We're probably about in the middle" of issuing layoff warnings, said Lynelle Jolley, spokeswoman for the Department of Personnel Administration.

California is succumbing to the same budget pressures hammering public payrolls around the country. State and local governments lost 17,000 jobs last month, according to federal statistics, despite 22,000 Minnesota employees who came off the unemployment rolls in August after that state's government shutdown ended.

"California has to pay less per employee, have fewer employees or find more money to pay for what it has," said Pepperdine University political scientist Michael Shires.

Unions aren't willing to make more concessions, lawmakers didn't reach a tax deal "and there's no sign that there's more money coming any time soon," Shires said. "That leaves layoffs."

Wow! The government has office assistants! No private company I’ve dealt with has had one of those, except for the top guy, in over 10 years. Even the top level directors and VP’s are expected to do their own typing.

So bye-bye union workers. Don't these morons ever learn? Or are they blinded by their greed?

I have a suggestion for the state of California. Get rid of the entire California Air Resources Board (CARB) and especially the buffoon Mary Nichols. The will save billions and won't hurt the environment. California can live with EPA as all the other states are.

Also kill plans for the ridiculous (and that an understatement) High Speed Rail. This is the boondoggle of all boondoggles. This Train may be the biggest waste of money in the history of the state.

232,000 state employees with 1/3 of those in the Sacramento area. 77,000 state employees in the Sacramento area? Wow.

Levels of taxation, regulation, and bureaucratic control will remain the same. Nothing here will free up the economy and initiate any growth.

Numbers of unemployed will increase.
Flow of action within government offices will slow to the point of inaction.

Things will be more frustrating and will look worse than before.

And the Left will turn around and say, "See?? We DID cut government spending, and it only made things worse!!"

If you don't agree with spending cuts then you just end up cutting spending in stupid ways that do not help solve any problems. When I see this list of who is getting cut, I do not disagree with the cuts (who needs a typist??) but I also see that nothing useful is being accomplished here.

Abolishing the EPA, Dept of Education and Dept of Energy would be far more effective.

California state workers

Isn't that a contradiction in terms?

I said it first! Everybody has to buy me a round.

While I am all for the public workers going through the same sh** private sector employees are having to endure, California is giving free tuition to illegals, not to mention free health care, welfare etc. but can’t keep their public sector employees working due to lack of money. Does anyone need any thing more than that as an example of just how stupid and destructive the demwit communist party is?

Thanks for the assist. I didn't want to be blamed for taking up all of FR's bandwidth.

Whatever that is.

ILL-ANNOY needs to do this kind of thing....sooner than later. ILL-ANNOY is in worse shape than California on a percentage basis.

--I don't post that very often for the bandwidth reason--seems like a slow morning so did it-

-think one agency was being eliminated or merged last time I posted it so may be one less---

California’s Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation alone has 50,000+ employees. So 3,500 is just a taste of frosting, not even slicing the cake yet.
