The Rick Perry - ACORN connection explained: A primer for non-Texans
EnterStageRight ^ | Sept. 5, 2011 | Linda Prussen-Razzano

Posted on 09/04/2011 8:46:10 PM PDT by Clairity

In 2005, the Texas State Legislature passed HB 1823, which allowed people with a Contract for Deed to refinance their mortgage and convert the Contract for Deed to a Deed of Trust. They were then able to get out from under the terms of the contract, transfer title to their name, and assume full responsibility for their property and their lives. There were a number of steps homeowners had to take to comply with the law, and they were obviously responsible to pay the mortgage, but it gave homeowners greater power over their property.

ACORN, which supported HB 1823, praised the Legislature and Governor Perry for passing it.

So when folks go around bashing Governor Perry for signing these bills just because ACORN supported one of them, it tells me they are all hat, no cattle, and a person to be pitied. They are obviously not a Texan.

Fine.

So a very important question would be, why did ACORN support HB 1823?

I hate “guilt-by-association” arguments. They are generally bereft of logic, and are used when there is no real issue to debate.

There are a few issues where I have legit concerns about Perry.

Most of the stuff on here and in the left wing rags (which people on here often cite for some reason) is complete BS.

Some anti-Perry posters have been posting a picture without explanation, where Perry is shown signing a bill, with some ACORN members in the background. And they were claiming some mysterious close relationship between ACORN and Perry.

This article explains in detail what the bill was and how it came about — as a result of a natural disaster and how some real estate “ownership” worked in Texas.

From: The scrutiny of Rick Perry Begins Here

As with Trump months ago, here I come to harsh the buzz of conservatives who, understandably unimpressed by the field, felt a surge of energy when it appeared Rick Perry might be entering the fray. An appetizer:

At the Capitol on Monday, opposition grew against the governor’s order Friday to require the human papilloma- virus vaccine for girls starting in September 2008. Lawmakers who said their offices were inundated with angry calls and e-mails from constituents over the weekend rushed to file bills that would override the governor’s order, which they said revokes parental rights and could encourage young girls to be promiscuous. The governor, however, stood firm.

“Providing the HPV vaccine doesn’t promote sexual promiscuity any more than the Hepatitis B vaccine promotes drug use,” Perry said Monday. “If the medical community developed a vaccine for lung cancer, would the same critics oppose it, claiming it would encourage smoking?”

I think this one will vary in concern value. Some people are very edgy about any kind of forced vaccinations, for reasons even beyond the concept of government-mandated medical procedures. Others may give this a pass. I continue for the sake of the latter:

The group’s proudest moment came last week when Gov. Rick Perry signed a bill that makes important changes in the use of contracts-for-deed, a form of home lending that withholds a title from buyers until they have fully paid their loan.

Passage of the law, which will make it possible for buyers to convert their loans to traditional mortgages, was this year’s top Texas legislative goal for ACORN, which represents 175,000 low- and moderate-income families in 51 U.S. cities.

But hey, that can’t be too big of a deal, right? After all, John McCain was cozy with them as well, and he got the nomination in 2008! Not the only thing that he seems to have in common with John McCain’s ideology, either:

Legislation authored by border legislators Pat Haggerty and Eddie Lucio establishes an important study that will look at the feasibility of bi-national health insurance. This study recognizes that the Mexican and U.S. sides of the border compose one region, and we must address health care problems throughout that region. That’s why I am also excited that Texas Secretary of State Henry Cuellar is working on an initiative that could extend the benefits of telemedicine to individuals living on the Mexican side of the border.

This coming from the same guy who opposed Arizona’s immigration law. No, this is not an immediate “purity test” for conservatism. It’s a serious look at a person who seems awful close to asking us to elect them to be the leader of our country. Honestly, this governor from Texas looking to be president…seems a lot like the last governor from Texas looking to be president, in all the wrong ways.

Most people who don’t live in Texas are not familiar with “Contract for Deed” and the implications of having bought the house that way.

As I said repeatedly, the article explains it in detail.

But I guess the anti-Perry element is not interested in the facts, only in bashing him. It reflects on the integrity of such posters, not on Perry.

A different view:

Thanks to excessive activism coupled with past abuses by unscrupulous investors, the 79th Texas Legislature has now made it much more difficult for investors in Texas to work within their entrepreneurial vocation.

Two laws which were recently passed have dealt a deadly blow to the use of popular lease-options. SB 629, authored by Sen. Eddie Lucio (D-Brownsville) and sponsored by Rep. Harold Dutton (D-Houston), and HB 1823, authored by Rep. Harold Dutton and sponsored by Sen. Eddie Lucio.

These laws were initially introduced as a means to protect low-income buyers and immigrants along the Texas-Mexico border as the practice of lease-options by unscrupulous builders and developers are what is traditionally blamed for the creation of ‘colonias’ (identifiable unincorporated areas located within 150 miles of the Texas-Mexico border that lack infrastructure and ‘decent’ housing), however; their effect on real estate investors extends far beyond the state’s border regions.

SB 629 and its companion HB 1823 both enter into simultaneous effect on September 1, 2005.

http://www.insuranceforinvestors.com/2009/07/texas-lease-options-hb1823/

Rent to own is a huge rip off so not much sympathy from me. No reason for Perry to publicly give credit and by so doing credibility, to the despicable ACORN.

It appears Ricardo wanted to appeal to the illegals along the border that ACORN was mostly concerned with.

Funny you disagree with Sarah Palin, who declared Perry to be a true conservative.

“Rick Perry is true to conservative principles even when others think the party needs to go a different direction. I like that about him: he doesn’t care which way the wind blows, he acts on his beliefs. That’s why I am supporting Governor Rick Perry for re-election,” Palin wrote.

Palin wrote that Perry “walks the walk of a true conservative. And he sticks to his guns - and you know how I feel about guns!”

I do not dislike Gov. Perry. As a non-native 54 year Texican I can also say I do not like Gov. Perry.
Agree on a great many points, mostly 10th amendment arguments,.. bothered by cronyism.

To live and breathe Texan is to understand.

Don’t complain. Don’t explain.

Elites and illegals in sheer numbers stain this legacy. I hold hope.

Do me a favor. Quit escaping your statist nightmares only to move here and tell me how we should do things!
Hesitate to tell those with whom you seek refuge how to conduct their affairs.

Rick Perry is the Governor of the United States weakest Governorship and has managed to not screw up too bad.

Try as he might, he hasn’t.

Won’t complain...Won’t explain.

Snot rag has nothing to do with it. Being a conservative does. The fact that you’re ignoring better conservatives in a Presidential race proves to me you don’t care about conservatism at all- only falling behind the almighty (R) with ‘Anybody but Obama’ guiding your way. Good luck with that.

Perry will win and win big. Palin is already old news. If she does enter, she will lose rapidly like Thompson did. The only threat will be that she will split the base similar to what happened in 2008 and leave the door open for Romney.

For one, she does not have the financial backing like Perry does. She will have to spend much of her new found income, which will quickly dry up. This surely explains why she has not yet entered the race. Something is missing, and does not add up. Her internal polling is also seriously lacking. The RCP averages clearly illustrate what is happening to her so called “overwhelming popularity”. (Not really)

Get a grip fool. We are in the primaries. We don't want this idiot as President. He stinks worse than horse crap. He loves illegals. He did nothing as Governor to stop the border......oh but he does blame Obama. The two Democrats Perry and Obama sure do blame other people for their inadequacies. This is the time to discuss the candidates. Perry doesn't get a pass just like Palin didn't get a pass. Just like Bachmann did not get a pass. Just like Cain did not get a pass. Even Romney didn't get a pass. Your stupid Savior is not getting a pass either regardless of your desires. You are acting like the guy has the nomination already. NOPE NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!!!! If he gets the nomination (God Help Us) then we will get behind the man, but until then he is going to have to work for the position just like everyone else. Oh by the way, his state is burning down and he is nowhere to be found......oh he is on his way to South Carolina.....Wow. The guy is impressive during a state emergency......roll eyes!!!!
