Hurricane Irenes residue is likely to include a confusing debate over whether insurers or property owners are responsible for storm-caused water damage.
Theres no lack of clarity, however, over whether the insurance industry believes in climate change and its ties to lethal weather: It does.
As Bloomberg Businessweek reports in its Sept. 5 issue, the industry has absorbed many lessons from Sept. 11 about anticipating risk. One is that the recent spate of weather extremes is likely to continue -- and the insurance market must reflect that.
Interestingly, this puts the industry at odds with a number of Republican candidates who have made questioning climate change a not-insignificant part of their campaign strategy.
Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann dispute whether global warming is man-made.
Perry suggests that climate is affected by many variables, which scientists can manipulate so that they will have dollars rolling into their projects.
Mitt Romney is on the fence. Only Jon Huntsman Jr. has declared definitively that he trusts scientists on global warming.
Politicians have been known to dissemble about risk because voters generally dont like to hear bad news.
The insurance industry makes its money telling it to you straight -- how long youll probably live, what price your home will fetch, whether to repair or trade in your car.
You'll have to read the whole Bloomberg article at the site link, but that's the gist of it.
No need to read it. The insurers are looking at “climate change” as a way to invoke “act of God” clauses or some such.
The bottom line is finding a way to reduce or eliminate payouts.
A spate starting when? The only change has been increases in popultion, and the move of that population toward the beaches and into flood plains.
Just because insurers prepare for possible risks is no evidence at all that the rest of us have to believe or do anything.
Extreme weather is a favorite of the apocalypse cults. Despite evidence to the contrary, it feeds the fire.
To the rest of the country not already with us in regards to storm insurance, welcome to the real world from us in Florida.
This is an excellent example of deliberately distorting the actual facts to achieve a political advantage. I doubt whether any of the Republican candidates doubt the climate change is occuring - what they are doubting is the cause of the change.
The climate has changed since the beginning of the earth.
Only 13,000 years ago much of north America was covered with 2 miles of ice. There’s obviously been a lot climate change since then... Thank God!
Why tell the truth when a lie will do? Isn’t that the liberal mantra?
Only if, taking both sides of the issue is, "on the fence".
“he insurance industry makes its money telling it to you straight”
Apparently this guy has never dealt with insurance companies before.
It may come as a shock to some people, but insurance companies hype climate change as a pretext to jack up premiums and make more $$$.
The claims of an upward trend in severe weather events due to global warming are all demonstrably false.
This falls into the same category as trying to convince conservatives of AGW by saying the Defense Department is planning for it.
Except for certain localized floods. Individual gauges have shown a trend in record rains. Those have not generally shown up in broader river basins (no trend in river floods). High temperature records are polluted by station errors and heat islands, low temp records are to some extent too and comparisons of records (showing highs increasing a lot more than lows) are pretty much bogus.
Tropical storm accumulated energy worldwide is trending down. Droughts occur infrequently so it is hard to glean a trend, but there is none that I know of.
Or establish a legal basis for them to receive some future subsidy or payout from Uncle Sam.
Only a complete fool could doubt the FACT of climate change, the climate has changed constantly as long as there has been climate to change. What is in doubt are the CAUSES of climate change and the NATURE of climate change. Global warming is not occurring now despite all the screaming and since no global warming is occurring there can be no MANMADE global warming. As for the beginnings of another ice age, something we were warned was already beginning thirty or more years ago, I leave that to the real climate experts, Al Gore is not to be consulted.
As for those who claim that there is an ever greater risk of more and stronger hurricanes, check the historical records.
Correct, and hence being on the fence can also be dangling either leg on a side. Of course, that really hurts.
Anyone who follows the credible and nonideological experts/commentators knows that the earth has actually been cooling for at least the last decade. Moreover, everything I’ve read indicates solar activity will likely spur the cooling trend.
Of course, the left’s propaganda organs, envirowackos, demrats, RINOs (including Romney), and Marxist agendists choose to ignore that inconvenient truth.
Ping. He’s on record ass saying he can’t prove climate chsnge (aka global warming) is happening, but he believes it.
But, hey, if your the leftist media trying to desperatly to promote the RINO Romney then I guess he’s on the fence. I’ll give them that he’s sitting on something, but it isn’t a fence.
