Rick Perry moves ahead of Mitt Romney in race for GOP nomination in new poll

Aided by strong tea party support, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has surged in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, pushing former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney into second place and significantly diminishing the once-rising star of Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.), according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

"Well, since Perry jumped into the race, Palin has gone from a comfortable 2nd to a distant 3rd place in this poll. She appears to be going in the wrong direction... "

Your are right, trends are important when gaging momentum.

Going in the wrong direction even though she hasn’t announced? If she gets in you may have to get your head around her as the nominee.

Sarah isn't in any position seeing as how she refuses to declare. And she is not like other candidates. Like what was said above...everyone knows who she is. She might get a bump from declaring but she won't come anywhere near to Perry's jump. There are risks inherent in his position since his frontrunner status was so immediate. As more is learned of his record it's possible his numbers could go down as rapidly as they arose. The flip side of that is since so few knew him if he impresses enough he can improve already good numbers. For her....she has to convince people who have decided opinions of her already that they really do want her after all and....that she can win. I could see the first but I don't think she has a chance of convincing people she can win. Electability does matter this year...if it didn't Romney wouldn't have led as long as he did.

Still, the top two Republican candidates are at rough parity in how they match up against Obama. Among registered voters, Romney edges the president, 49 to 45 percent. Perry is in a similarly competitive position, at 47 percent to Obama’s 46 percent.

Ah...another poll other then Rass showing Perry leading Obama. Okay, now there are at least two...

The Palin supporters here have done her a great disservice.

Her high name recognition and low image ratings will take much more time to reverse than she has.

Agreed.

I gave you a link to the NBC/Wall Street Journal Poll. It has Perry at 36%. (Interesting) By the way, that would be the link from #29.

I don't think there is even a slight chance of that.

“To do that, she is going to have to start changing people’s minds about her.”

I believe Reagan had the interest in persuading his former opponent about his conservative beliefs and positions.

So when the Reagan democrats appeared, it wasn’t an accident.

He is the only candidate in my memory who took that approach. And it worked, twice.

He knew he needed a few dems, and quite a few from the middle, independents.

He was a uniter, not a divider.

It’s pretty obvious that they really don’t care.

I doubt it is this simple, but it appears Palin shaves 1-2 percentage points from everyone else. In reality, I think if she gets in, it will take most away from Bachmann and Cain.

Yes, I posted both the NBC/WSJ poll and the Battleground poll this morning. NBC had Perry at 38% and Battleground had him at 36%.

He knew he needed a few dems, and quite a few from the middle, independents.

Any GOP candidate is going to need that this time around. So far, Perry is the only person besides Romney who is showing any ability to draw moderates and independents. Perry is pulling both the Tea Party people and the independents and conservative Dems.

I noticed that Mitt stepped into Perry’s slot at the DeMint forum yesterday.

They're both RINOs, how could you tell?

LOL! I happen to have just got up and am on duty. You see, I happen to be one of those “corrupt” and evil “Big Oil” criminals who works steady for 2 months, 12-16 hour days with a whole week off. (When I can find the time)

I sleep real hard during the day and don’t get out much.

With all due respect PF, you sound like Obama asking Republicans to be civil while his own side talks trash.

All I've ever wanted to do was post what I know about Perry that I think disqualifies him as being conservative and as a result, I have been attacked in every thread. I am more than willing to show respect to any Perry supporter who shows the same respect for me. Unfortunately, they are far and few in between.

Those who believe respect is “earned” very seldom give it.

It also seems that those who are admired the most, show the most respect toward everyone they meet, and consequently, they rise to the top. (Ever notice that?)
