Coulter: Palin's fans are a liability, she has become 'the Obama of the tea party'
The Daily Caller ^ | September 6, 2011 | Jeff Poor

It’s been three years since former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made her splash onto the national stage as Sen. John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 presidential election. And since then she has acquired a very loyal following. But is that helping or hurting her?

On Tuesday’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” conservative columnist and author of “Demonic: How the Liberal Mob Is Endangering America,” Ann Coulter expressed her concern over the Palin phenomenon. She was asked by substitute host Laura Ingraham if Palin can maintain her status as a tea party favorite by stringing people along about her potential 2012 candidacy.

“Maybe not,” Coulter said. “Newt Gingrich carried it on for 15 years and I kind of think that might be what we’re getting here, largely because of the polls. I mean, you just showed the Fox News poll, Gallup took a poll, I don’t know – five, six months ago, showing that not quite as high as 74 percent, but 65 percent said they would never definitely, positively, ever vote for Sarah Palin… I might add, that oh, it’s the media’s fault and they attacked her and saw her as a threat, all of which I believe is true.”

Coulter pointed out that conservatives are reluctant to criticize Palin for fear of a backlash and spoke about her own experiences.

“Most Americans don’t want Sarah Palin for president,” Coulter continued. “But she’s become sort of the Obama of the tea party. She’s just the one to a certain segment of right-wingers and the tiniest criticism of her, I think many of your viewers may not know this – no conservative on TV will criticize Palin because they don’t want to deal with the hate mail. You say her voice is a few octaves too high or perhaps Michele Bachman’s speaking voice is more modulated and you will be inundated with enraged emails.”

But Coulter said that the loyal following Palin has could be a liability in the long run.

“No, I agree and I think she’s terrific at what she does, but I tend to agree with you,” Coulter said. “I got sick of it with Newt Gingrich – too, fish or cut bait because you are ginning up this group of Americans who will not even consider anyone else. You know, we used to all love Sarah Palin – conservatives like me for her enemies. I’m starting to dislike her because of her fans… I think she’s bright, but her good points do not seem to be in the direction of running for president. I sort of wish just like Newt Gingrich, just run so we can get this over with.”

I remember the run up to the 2008 election, when half of FR was telling us that "the Bradley effect" and "the PUMAs" were not being captured by the polls, and that the polls were corrupt anyway, and that Obama couldn't win.

Polls were right: FR was, definitively, wrong.

She is no more than a shock jock-ette, an anorexic Howard Stern wannabe.

Shock Jock-ette -- that's Ann to a T!

Palin is for Country
Coulter is for Coulter

I like Ann & Laura (I’m presently reading both of their books) but I think sometimes people like these two live in a kind of northeastern bubble that disables them from connecting to what real america is believing.

Grew up in state next to theirs ( They grew up in CT ) and I am familiar with their hometowns etc.

They remind me of my sister(s) ( sometimees drunken ) college roommates with their quasi sarcastic / sardonic humor. Yes they are the same age as my sisters.

I am convinced it is not just North East but generational as well. Some sort of an 80's MTV Timewarp Thing.... For some reason, Laura grates me more than Ann at times, I have to turn her off, like nails on a chalkboard...

I only found it because I followed the link number at the bottom of your post to 247, then to post 95. Post 95 goes to post 89. Look below. trickamsterdam had stated a few days ago that they supported “gay rights”. I went to see what bilge they were spewing. Voila! Post is gone. A quick check showed that so were they.

Coulter may be a media whore and a shrewish Tom Petty in drag, but she has a point. Palin has a cult of personality around her that definitely reeks of the cult of personality that surrounds Dear Leader. This is especially true on Free Republic. Those Sarah people on FR would be wise to consider not becoming that which we accuse our opponents of being . . .

Every poll done for the entire month of August and September 2007 show McCain leading. Like I said, they were accurate last time around.

Oh please. Palin has been vetted for the last 3 years. The latest attack being 23,000 emails that showed NOTHING. She was absolutely cleared. MSM couldn’t find squat. Yet here come other candidate supporters, spewing the same tired rhetoric that the MSM does and it’s all been debunked. Over and over and over. When FReepers start sounding like the MSM and using their debunked talking points the problem is THEM and not Palin supporters.

Polls are wrong and you can’t accept it even when faced with proof. Fine. You “live or die” by polls. Most FReepers will remain cynics.

That guy really gets around. Did he pay off the other seven polling companies too?

I've been clear that polls can absolutely be wrong, but as of right now the trend is consistent. We'll see what happens if she announces.

Absolutely agree. But I have to tell you that I don't buy polls.

I just showed you that the RCP polling was absolutely accurate for this point at the campaign four years ago. Maybe you can’t accept that they might be accurate.

A web poll? You mean like the ones that always show Ron Paul winning in a landslide?

The point was that the RCP polling in September of 2007 was accurate. It might be this time around too.
