Delhi bomb: High Court explosion kills nine

A bomb outside the Indian High Court in the capital Delhi has killed at least nine people and injured 45, Home Secretary RK Singh has said.

Police said the bomb was apparently placed in a case outside the main gates leading to the reception at the court.

The area was busy with lawyers and witnesses waiting for day passes.

Police have now placed Delhi and the financial capital Mumbai on a state of high alert.

In June, a bomb exploded in a car outside the same Delhi court complex. There were no casualties on that occasion. Crowded area

The latest explosion occurred around 10:17 local time (04:47 GMT).

It was caused by "at least a medium-intensity bomb", home ministry official UK Bansal said.

"It appears that the bomb was in a suitcase because we have the remains of that suitcase," Home Secretary Singh told the CNN-IBN news channel.

Forensic experts are now collecting debris to analyse but there has been no word from police on who they suspect might be behind the attack, our correspondent adds.

Actually, there are a couple of different, unrelated groups that could be responsible. Other than the obvious LeT/Pak/muslim terrorists, you also have Kashmiri separatists, Maoists/Naxalites, and various radical nationalist groups. On a more international level, it’s remotely possible that the attack was instigated by the Chinese as part of a long-term destabilization plot.

Forgot to add: it could also be some overzealous action spun off from the recent anti-corruption demonstrations, which implicated a HC judge among others.

Many Islamic terrorists are lawyers in all countries
now. Above suspicion, they are.

Good point. India is a huge country with a long legacy of economic injustice and border conflicts. Between that and its many ethnic subgroups willing to take assistance from anybody, there is a witch's brew of possibilities, some perhaps conflated with extra-national motives. Hell, even Myanmar might be behind this.

Celebrate diversity. /s

The Naxalites have little history of attacking anything other than police/paramilitary/industrial facilities in rural central India and they have virtually nothing to gain by attacking a court in an urban area. It kills whatever little sympathy they have.

The same goes for the Nationalist/Hindu extremist groups-they have little or nothing to gain. The recent anti-corruption protests were almost entirely peaceful in nature-bombing a court does not give any brownie points.

Actually the Naxalites have also derailed or bombed several passenger trains, as well as blockading highways and other infrastructure. I acknowledge that they are unlikely to attack such a high-profile target, just that unfortunately here radical Islam isn’t the only suspect.

And I wasn’t implying that the mainstream anti-corruption protesters would have done something like this, but there are always some who carry things too far.

Amlost all Naxalite attacks have been in rural areas of the Deccan and central-North of India. They have little to gain by attacks beyond that region. Even now there is division of which Naxalite groups have derailed rail tracks since there are plenty of factions.

They’re also found extensively here in the Eastern Ghats and Northeast. There was a report not that long ago that they were even coming into the Capital here (Bhubaneswar), which is evidence that they’ve branched out a bit from hiding in the trees.

And what exactly were they doing there?? Building/distributing arms-calling for insurrection? Maoists arrested in urban areas have almost always been involved in propaganda, fund-raising work. Which is very difficult to stop in a place like India.
