WASHINGTON (CNNMoney) -- Should the Postal Service get its way on laying off thousands of workers, the cuts would weigh heavily on two segments of the population hard hit in recent years: minorities and veterans.

The U.S. Postal Service, teetering toward default, wants the power to cut 120,000 jobs by voiding labor protections for currently protected workers.

"In a memo discussing potential layoffs, the Postal Service proposes giving veterans preference in layoffs. But unions insist veterans' jobs would be at stake."

Oh man, I can't believe even mentioning giving veterans preference over other classes hasn't been slammed by Sharpton and Jackson yet.

The Postal Service is one of the largest employers of all minorities, led by African-Americans, who make up 21% of workers.

Why? That looks racist to me.

Yeah, let’s don’t cut on the basis of merit/achievement. Let’s allow the same stupid decision making that gets USPS into debt into the first place.

Outsource this damn stuff and get rid of them all.

Funny, you never heard this sort of hand-wringing when HP, Dell, Verizon and every other major company was facing a business turn-down, and laying off millions.

Sorry, the business isn’t there to support the workforce, join the millions of others and find another job. Be sure to thank the people responsible for this down-cycle - the Libtards that rammed every proposal through Congress, who rode rough-shod over the Republicans, and who are nearly 100% responsible for the situtation we all enjoy today.

My cartoon bubble has little Oliver Twist children standing by mailboxes with forlorn looks on their dirty faces.

If USPS were to lease the buildings to private industry, it would be more efficient. The workers would be re hired.

Overnight the USPS would be profitable. No more stamps...no more cutting services etc.

Funny, like everything else the gov’t touches, the prices go up and the services go down.

I remember when the USPS would deliver mail on the Sunday before Christmas.

Every time I see a postal employee driving a SUV instead of one of those little trucks, I better understand how and why the USPS is broke. My mail carrier drives around my complex as much as she walks. That huge Chevy starts and stops a minimum of six times in less than a square acre.

There’s got to be a cheaper way. Since this government monopoly can’t seem to figure it out, why isn’t mail delivery out-sourced to private industry — you know, that place where evil profit actually creates efficiency, great customer service and careful processes.

NO... it will affect ALL Americans... shared sacrifice and all that crap you know. Here is an idea... everyone in congress takes a 20% pay cut and gives up their benefits... there is some shared sacrifice that you and I will NEVER see.

This national "House of Cards" is tumbling down even as we speak. Sadly, less than half the adult population even knows or seems to care. The MSM and the NEA have done their work well.

BTW did anyone notice the Communist fist pump by Hoffa at the end of his speech the other day?

The really bad part is 120,000 jobs to be cut, think of how many they are not cutting. Why would they have that many employees in the first place.

570,000 employees. They are spending a lot to build new post offices, though.

“In Denver the primary employees seem to be foreigners.”

Here in Northern California where I live, going to the PO is like a trip to Mumbai. but then so is going to Costco. I am beginning to think that the US is part of the British Commonwealth.

Absolutely is racist, in there hiring practices. Blacks make up 12.5% of the population, yet are 21% of the Postal work force. I demand reparations now!
