-"Why should the state pay volunteer fire depts?

Are you going to let your ideological bent get in the way of common sense?

Because not all "local" communities have a sufficient base to cover the needs of emergency response and fire fighting. My son is a volunteer firefighter, he does not get paid 1 cent, and is out on calls almost every night for our town and surrounding towns. Get clue before you make comments like that.

Volunteer firefighters are the backbone of most of the communities in the country. Sorry, but you need money to operate and maintain the resource capabilities for emergency response.

Then that area doesn't get all the bells and whistles that other departments do! DUH! Believe it or not, every department doesn't need a 36' ladder truck, so the fire fighters do NOT need that training, even though MANY local departments ask for money for it - talk about stupid! I know because because I am a volunteer and I work with the budget board to see what funds we request!

Talk about getting a "clue!" That's why it is called "VOLUNTEER!" If he wants to get paid, then hire on with some big city unit and enjoy your lifestyle, but don't complain about not getting "1 cent" when your son VOLUNTEERED his time! Duh!

If you would climb down off your "Rick Perry sucks all life from everything" soapbox for just a minute, you would know that MOST funding for volunteer fire departments is generated LOCALLY!! And if a department is getting the majority of it's funds from the state, then they should shut down and tell the locals to get better insurance or pony up some funds for their local volunteer fire department! Duh!

Then they need to consolidate with larger depts. I don't see where it says that every home in America has a right to fire protection.

What area has that number of fires in a normal year? Every night? If that is the case, you have an arsonist in your midst.
