A chartered jet carrying Russia's major league ice hockey team Lokomotiv has crashed on take-off near the central city of Yaroslavl, with 43 deaths. Two people survived with serious injuries after the disaster, which saw the jet burst into flames shortly after leaving an airport near the city. It appears many of the team were aboard, heading to Belarus for the season's first match. Russian reports suggest the jet may have struck a radio mast. Witnesses saw it burst into flames shortly after taking off from the airport, about 250km (160 miles) north-east of Moscow. A number of foreign citizens were killed, including the team's Canadian coach, Brad McKinnon, and Swedish goalie Stefan Liv.

Sad..a former manager for the Atlanta Thrashers was on board as were several former NHL players
Lokomotiv should have taken a train.
Prayers for their souls and for their loved ones.
Wow. That is horrid.
So sorry for the people. God forgive them and have mercy and let them in Heaven.
Wow, that sounds exactly like something Ronald Reagan would say.
Many years ago Russia's runways had pot holes and cracks so large that bushes grew up in the middle. They'd leave burned skeletons of crashes along side the runways that passengers saw upon takeoff (btdt). Hopefully, things have changed. If not, that plane crash could have been caused by any number of obstacles during takeoff.
Salei and McCrimmon were former Red Wings. I remember Demitra well with the Blues. Karpovtsev I remember with the Blackhawks.

Coming to US along with a devaluating dollar and growing deficit soon.
Karlis Skrastins. He played for the Stars last year.
Damn. I remember getting MeCrimmon’s autograph after a Bruins game when I was 17.
Of those crashes only 1 was attributed to mechanical failure or design flaw. The others were attributed to weather or crew error.
But we are discussing Russia and the former Soviet Union. Honesty of reporting is always in doubt.
Just like the plane crash last year that killed half the government officials from Poland was fog and pilot error.
