It was an ordinary night, August 26, at the Exxon Tiger Mart at South Polk Street and Interstate 20 in Dallas.
C.J. Thomas, the store's clerk, was behind the counter when a rush of customers came through the door at 10:12 p.m.
"There was more coming in than going out," Thomas said. "Once they realized how many were in there, one of the students started throwing stuff and screamed out. Everything after that went crazy."
Store surveillance cameras from different angles show bottles being thrown.
Seconds later, Thomas ran to the front door. He tried to close it, but he couldn't hold back the crowd.
Some of them grabbed drinks, chips, and other items and began pushing their way out. Thomas said he tried to stop some people from stealing.
"In the process of them walking out, tried to stop a student with a lot of things in his hands and when I tried to do that, he shoved me out into the parking lot and swung at me," Thomas said.

Repeat after me, Mr. store clerk:
“I was afraid for my life; I thought I’d be killed.”
Yes, I had formed the impression that these were not Chinese-American graduate students working on doctorates in biochemistry.
Great dream! ;-D
One time with the boss there while I was at the cash register, he runs in and yells for the gun. Some punks had stolen some oil cans. My boss jumped in his car with the gun and chased after the punks' car. After 5 to 10 minutes he came back, white as a sheet. He told me he cornered them in a dead-end street and confronted them with the gun. Four guys got out, all with guns. Fortunately, the thieves were calm. My boss quickly got the hell out of there.
You can't stop a mob.
I’ve not heard of any flash mobs in Louisiana as of yet. We like to shoot those types here and the local LEO’s will high five you for doing so. Even in New Orleans they don’t take kindly to these types. Hurricanes withstanding of course.
Pump? Too slow.
That looks efficient!
That's BS. And the example you provided in no way justifies that conclusion.
People panic and run when a gun is aimed in their direction. Why would you think they'd stick around and fight?
Agreed. No one wants to be the first one in a mob to get shot.
S what’s the big deal? It’s government policy to tax the rich and redistribute wealth. These youths were just showing a little initiative and taking on the responsibility themselves. Wll maybe that’s the problem. Personal responsibility is a no-no. Other than that they should be acknowledged by the White House and DNC.
Invest in lead!
That's your opinion, which you are entitled to. I was caught up in the inner-city riots of the mid-60s. I saw mob action up close, and got the snot kicked out of me a couple times. Mobs do crazy things. Even when a gun is pointed at them, they are not following logic or reason. Some are cool and brave. One time I was knocked down, being pummeled and kicked by a mob of blacks. Having a gun in that situation may or may not have mattered, but there were almost a hundred blacks around. Three brave black guys pushed the others away and pulled me out and got me to safety.
My wife, when she was younger also got beat up in those same riots. We have guns, but are realists that you still have to weigh all your options in order to survive.
Let's say you are armed and suddenly you find yourself being menaced by a flash mob. Seems to me you have only two options - be attacked or use the gun in self defense.
What would you do?
The professional do-gooders here whined and moaned that there were no grocery stores in what we might call a bad part of town. Finally, with enough prodding, some naive people put a grocery store there. Within weeks, it was robbed. Comments left on the local newspaper’s website showed that folks had a pool going betting on the exact date it would happen. Somebody wrote, “I’m not $100 richer, but somebody is.” Reality strikes again.
It all depends on the situation. If you blindly use your gun, you may take down a few attackers but you will surely die at the hands of the mob. Unless you have been in a life or death situation, you have no business speculating on what someone should do. I have had a gun shoved in my face several times, and have also been confronted with knife-wielding punks. I talked myself out of each situation, without having to pull out a weapon of my own. My friend Robert who lived next door to me fought back against an attacker and died with his throat slit, just a few houses up from ours. My friend Tommy down the street got shot in the stomach while pulling his own weapon. Your best weapon is your brain and your mouth; use accordingly and you may survive.
You are an armed private citizen and a flash mob is menacing you. You have at best a few seconds to make a decision.
Do you go for your gun... yes or no?
