Owners Angry After Cops Shoot Dog in Backyard

But Samuelson's neighbor, Fernando Perez, said he told the cops several times that Ozzy was roaming in the back.

When the security alarm system at the home went off, Samuelson called Perez to check it out while she made the 20-minute drive to her house, he said. Perez said he knew not to go into the backyard because of the dog and when officers arrived, he warned them.

"'Be careful. It’s a big dog,' I told them. They told me to go back to my house," said Perez, who repeated the warning several more times. "Before I get to my driveway, I hear the two shots. They walked into the backyard with the guns in their hand. Then they ran from the backyard like they were scared or something."

Samuelson said she got Ozzy to protect the house and deter thieves. Police have not said what triggered the alarm.

"He was our protector," Samuelson said. "He’s a huge part of our family."

What a crock! The dog was on it's own property and had there been "a shooter," don't you think the dog would have been after him? If the dog was so vicious that the cops had to kill him, certainly he would have been so vicious that "a shooter" would have either shot him or been attacked. DUH!

Stop apologizing for BAD COPS. Cops are beginning to become enemies of the people they are supposed to be working for, just like the Obama government. Swaggering thugs with guns.

If the good cops--the majority of guys out there--don't like being smeared as thugs because of the actions of a few bad cops, maybe they should police themselves. Guys whose behavior reflects badly on the rest should be ostracized, harrassed, lectured to, suspended, put on a desk or in other ways convinced that it's time for them to find another job. As long as the "good cops" tolerate the presence of thugs and punks with guns, they are just as bad as the thugs.

Maybe the unions should stop focusing solely on defending these thugs and begin working to get them removed.

If the criminal has "run through the yard," then he ain't there and there is no reason to kill the dog to investigate . . . especially when the owner is on her way home.

No offense but there's no supposing required. The article states that it's the PDs policy for their cops to not enter a yard if a dog is present. That was right from the PD spokesman.

That is also the policy the Chicago PD follows: Dog in yard - Do Not Enter. They do a visual inspection of the property from where they are for a break-in (front, side, or from alley) while dispatch calls Animal Control. And if a door is ajar they sit on the house and wait for Back-up and Animal Control.

I’m not excusing the cops on this, I’m explaining the reality.

The reality is that when a criminal us being chased by cops, a useful strategy is to hop a fence and run through yards.

A dog, who is surpised, is likely to not react to the first person, but he will react to the second (cop) and possibly attack.

In this story, there is no excuse. The dog would have not have sat quietly while a gunman was hiding in the yard. The cop should have realized this and not went in the yard at akk, especially since the owner had made them aware of its presence.

The procedure, when a non-criminl owner is in a position to control the dog, they should be allowed to do so.

All these reports of cops shooting dogs -- and there are so many such incidents -- yet I don't think I've ever seen anyone suggest taking political action to remedy it. Is this not America?

Start with your community or your county or your state, whatever works best for you. Get organized, get focused, and get the damn laws passed to rein them in.

Better do it. And don't forget, the police don't only kill dogs. Paramilitary police, SWAT teams, actions against citizens recording police activity -- these are additional concerns.

Don't just sit there typing. Do something.

Suppose only one person runs through a dog's yard. If your assertion is right, the dog would not react to that single intrusion. He would only react if there were a second intruder.

In addition, citizens ought to be able to "opt out" of police protection. If you have a concern, you should be able to protect your home FROM the police.

I can’t imagine my well-trained dog shot because a poorly-trained official was afraid!

We are fortunate up here to have authorities who understand that the mama moose and pre-hibernating bears are agressive even here in the city.

I carry bear spray and my .44 for our city hikes. When moose hunting, Sox stays at camp and my 40.06 and I walk the day, with an eye on the blueberry patches.

Alaska is the most wonderful place in the entire United States ... don’t get me started on the fishing - my freezer is half-full of salmon and halibut, saving room for this year’s moose!

Everyone I know has a dog, and we loves us some Iditarod in February.

Cruelty is ugly, and fear does not make a good law enforcement officer!

I live in south central LA. My yard's pretty typical where I live.
