BASTROP, Texas Gov. Rick Perry did not show up as expected Saturday at a news conference convened by his office to brief reporters on the Texas wildfires. Perry aides, citing logistical issues, said the governor initially had been scheduled to appear at a location with restricted access.
The location was changed to an accessible spot, which was a burned-out home and chocolate shop along the main highway, and local officials briefed the media on the fire situation without him.
"He's in Austin," said Allison Castle, a spokeswoman for the governor, in response to a flurry of questions about Perry's whereabouts after the briefing. The governor did not go to Bastrop today, she added.
Another Perry spokeswoman, Catherine Frazier, said: By the time we nailed down a second location we wouldnt be able to get the governor there in time without making everybody wait."
Local and state officials appeared at the briefing to provide an update on a state voucher program that allows displaced residents to stay in hotels, in advance of the arrival of federal aid. Nearly 1,400 homes were destroyed in the Bastrop blaze, making it the most destructive fire in state history. Texas emergency management chief Nim Kidd also warned that as the brutal drought continues, fire danger across the state remains severe. "The next fire we have could be the worst one we've ever seen," Kidd said.

Oh noooooooooos. I wonder where he was! I remember when they were looking for that South Carolina Governor.....
Prayers that he is ok and not hurt or anything.
Nothing in the article, or a video report I saw earlier that anything was wrong with him, but it’s very odd, I think.
Unlike Clinton, who made everyone wait; or Bambi "it's all about me me me".
God bless the folks in Bastrop, and everyone affected by the fires.
Yeah...they said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail, when in fact, he was nailing Argentinian Tail.
KXAN-Perry a no show at presser
He was in Austin. I think he still is.
The location of the press conference was changed at the last minute and the governor wasn't able to get there at the start time. They didn't want to make people wait.
In California they turned away skill fireman because they didn’t have a truck that was a pumper/sprayer.
What was the high temp today? That would be something to consider in making people wait.
The video indicates that the reports, who were also in Austin, made it in plenty of time to the switched location. it took them 30 mins. from Austin to the new location. “Which begs the question, why could the governor not make it as well?”
It’s probably better he didn’t show up, those folks have their hands full with the fires.
Perry can do them more good staying out of their way and doing what he can to get them whatever they need.
reports = REPORTERS
Not sure what the high was in Austin, but we’re all hitting in the mid to upper 90s this weekend, so they’re in that range.
You suppose Perry’s in Argentina with a lover?
That is what I read and saw on the news as well.
LOL - right?
Somehow, I don't think Perry's going to be doing any mysterious disappearing acts these days.
I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
Much ado about nothing.
My prayers and concerns have been with our fellow citizens who are in harm's way, those who have suffered losses and the firefighters.
That’s wonderful you won’t lose sleep over it. I don’t think most people would. lol
Saw this awhile ago. Prayers for this Constable’s family, and loved ones:
Travis County Constable Cpl. Kevin Aigner died on duty Saturday after having trouble breathing. He was 38.
Precinct 2 Constable Adan Ballesteros said Aigner was helping to guard homes damaged in the Steiner Ranch wildfire.
He collapsed and was taken via STAR Flight to Seton Medical Center. He died after leaving the scene, Ballesteros said.

Not sure why the Soros funded Texas Tribune has been so popular on here in recent weeks.
Tragic loss. Prayers for his family and friends.
Well, they hate Perry.
As do some FReepers. ;-)
(I am not one of them.)
I wouldn’t know. I’ve posted one thread in years, and the last certainly wasn’t ‘Soros-funded.”
But news is news, regardless of where it’s coming from.
Glad to know you don’t hate Perry. That makes us agree on at least one thing.
Texas Tribune = Soros = Wait for another report from anybody else.
I posted another source. Please see the video in the thread, as well.
Having people wait in those temps isn’t a smart thing, if there isn’t adequate services available.
It’s my home state, and yes it’s true.
I like Palin, Bachmann and Cain as well.
I feel like Perry has the best chance of beating Obama and that's important.
This could change, but that's how I see it for now.
I challenge any gov to deal with the circumstances that Texas is dealing with right now.
Just what we need, another out of touch President.
makes no sense at all. Unless you are living in the age of Obama.
I wouldn’t know. But what is reported is actually a fact. There are no reasons given as to the cause of a no show. I make no editorials as to it, except to say that I find it odd. It is newsworthy, regardless of the source; this is a man who is running for office and his actions, present and past, need to be looked at for how he responds to various events. Just as must be done for everyone running.
thanks, that’s better, but it’s Austin.
Perry’s not going to get a break from most media, Austin in particular, Houston Chronicle, Dallas, pretty much the same, hippie rags barely beat them out. Texas Monthly is another very lib source.
The large cities are like media everywhere, you have to consider it as a major outlet at least, but a good policy would be to always ignore the Texas Tribune in all cases.
“news is news”
I take any article I read in the New York Times, The Washington Post, Politcol...and the Texas Tribune with a grain of salt.
But that’s just me.
(and I might add any Austin or Dallas publication.)
I agree with all your comments. I wish Rubio would agree to VP or running, too.
What federal aid”? Obama has been dissing us while doling out dollars to Ct for a bit of rain.
Perry is hardly the culprit here.
Where's the Obama bucks?
Obama has finally said yes to Perry for help. It’s only taken about 1 1/2 years.
Hmmm...can you say election coming up?
This is pure shite.
I expected Perry to rub obamas nose in it but here we go, Perry sports home during the election to take care of business
and here come the libtards to prove that he wasn’t there.
Meanwhile they Make Obama out to be the caring Messiah.
I dont want to hear it until Obama opens up the wallet for disaster relief fo po ol Texans
Show me where Obama has given aid.
It wouldn’t shock me, he has to do damage control, but I haven’t seen it.
