Actually, I am a bit perplexed by the fighter scramble. Three guys in a bathroom may be going bad things, including assembling a bomb or something, but there’s not a lot a fighter can do if that happens.

And why three? One fighter would be plenty to keep an eye on a passenger jet. Two, in case one breaks, is being super safe. Three is just plain silly.

Something rattled the pilot enough to make the call. Why are three men locked in a bathroom during a cross country flight on 9/11? And why did they refuse to come out?

“NORAD scrambled two F-16 jets to shadow the flight until it landed safely at JFK”

“A NORAD spokesman confirmed the military aircraft intercepted the flight about 100 miles west of New York and shadowed it until it landed.”

There’s not much they can do in case of a bomb, but if the plane is hijacked and directed toward a building they can shoot it down before impact. Hope it never happens.
